THREE WEEKS AGO I POSTED A TOPIC---"WHAT MAKES KONAWAENA GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM SO GREAT"? WELL ALOT OF KONA SUPPORTERS CAME OUT TO BACK THEIR FAVORITE. BUT ALAS THE TRUTH OF THE MATTER WAS WHO WANTED IT MOST. I THINK KONA STARTED TO BELEIVE IN THE HYPE. AND FIGURED THAT NO MATTER WHO THEY PLAYED IT WAS A SHOE-IN FOR A VICTORY. WELL THE STARS WERE ALIGNED FOR THE TEAM THAT WANTED IT MOST,"LAHAINALUNA". AS GOOD AS KONA WAS, THE BIG LEAD THEY TOOK INTO HALFTIME WAS THEIR DOWNFALL. FIGURING THE OTHER TEAM WOULD FOLD JUST BECAUSE. LIKE I SAID IN THE FIRST TOPIC, I WAS NOT IMPRESSED WITH HOW KONA PLAYED. PRACTICING AGAINST THE BOYS TEAM, MAYBE IT PREPARED THEM FOR ???? THEY TRIED TO STEP UP TO THE PLATE BUT SEEMED TO HAVE FAULTERED. LIA DIDN'T SEEM TO BE THE SAME PERSON SHE WAS A YEAR AGO. MAYBE SITTING OUT BECAUSE OF HER SHOULDER INJURY WAS HOLDING HER BACK? I HEARD IT DIFFERENT ON THAT SUBJECT, GOT IT ON THE COCONUT WIRELESS OUT OF KONA. BUT DOESN'T MATTER TO ANYONE BUT LIA. HOPE SHE CAN DO BETTER.

YES THEY WILL BE A FORCE AGAIN NEXT YEAR NO DOUBT. PUNAHOU DIFFINATELY THERE.

BUT NOT MATTER HOW GOOD YOU MAY THINK YOU ARE OR HOW HARD YOU PRACTICE OR WHAT PLAYERS YOU GOT ON YOUR TEAM
    YOU GOT TO REMEMBER--------

ON ANY GIVEN DAY---ANY TEAM CAN BE BEAT!!!!!

I hear what u guys are saying, but Lahainaluna was #2 in the State the whole season. They finished #3 in States last season, and I think they played much better this year, and they have two of the best players in the State with Taufa and Viela. Its not like Kona lost to the #12 ranked team. But u are right any given day!!!!!

@brew, great stats, but didn't Kona go into the half leading by like 11. with all the hype about kona all season on how their are so good that they would walk over the rest of the state, if you were there watching the game, wouldn't you have thought that it was over? honestly? i did!!!

to the champions go the spoils---congrtulations Lahainaluna!

Yep, honestly I did think it was over, but Lahainaluna showed a lot of guts and hung in there, playing as a team with a lot of inspiration. Lahainaluna crowd was unreal. I wish all schools and communities could show the type of support they did. They might of been the difference when the Lunas were down, they kept cheering and picking them up.

Very true, the girls (on both teams) played very hard, and thats what makes watching the playoffs/finals great.

Yep, the better team "won that night"...but on any given night...it's Wildcat~Luna~Wildcat~Luna...

I wasn't there to see this game, but from what you guys saw...out of 10 games between these 2 teams....what would it be 5-5? Any opinions on this? Or too hard to predict?

I wouldn't be surprised to see Wildcat 6-4 or even 7-3...

I think in 10 games it owuld be Wildcats 9-1. But it doesn't matter on who would win most nights, it all comes down to that one night.

@aseyecit- When Kona was leading by 11 pts,to tell you the truth i didn't think it was over i actually taught that they could lose the game, WHY!!! They got the lead by Wall hitting crucial buckets when needed, they did not have on ball pressure on guards like what they are a custom to,Awa actually disappeard when i taught she was about to take over the game because Galderia was not gonna do it,Lunas guards pass to Taufa down on post was not even contested at times and there is only so much the help side D can do to contain Taufa. All night kona had that shot at free throw line and could not get any to FALL,Galdeira actually is a better scorer when she is flashing or moving without ball and did not take advantage of that rather she tried to set up offense 30ft from basket. They aggressive ON BALL defense is what sets them apart from other teams and that night.... THEY PLAYED NOT TO LOSE RATHER THEN PLAY TO WIN. Also the REF call against LIA at the end was the RIGHT CALL NO DOUBT. Only the last 2min of game did kona step up there MAN TO MAN D and frustrated MAIKI which they should of done from the start. Galdeira gave to much room and respect to maiki and that made it easy for her passes to Taufa, all year long i have stated that the only way you can have a chance at beating kona is to have an ALL STAR LOW POST PLAYER. In the D! states they were only 3 girls who i seen that was a threat on the post with there back towards the basket and that was TAUFA,IMAI AND MAEDA. TO ME PERSONALLY THEY BEAT THEMSELVES and i am not taking anything away from LUNAS. The LUNAS fans should of been named to the ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM.....

all year everyones mind, was KONAWAENA will win, Konawaena can't be beaten, Konawaena will walk through this tournament, on and on....any team can be beaten at anytime, when the new england patriots went to the supper bowl with a perfect season and lost the most important game remind me of Konawaena....still can't get over they beat Luna twice to turn around and loose to them the most important game of all.....

ooohh this title caught my eye!

well to be honest... Luna girls played a better game. I think Konawaena was tired in the 2nd half, missed alot of shots, didnt rebound started breaking down and turnovers was crazy.. in all fairness Luna's big girl dominated that 2nd half. Thats what makes the title of this forum so great...

This is the game that mattered.. thats where they needed to bring it. CAUSE ON ANY GIVEN DAY ANY TEAM CAN WIN. I still think Kona is a better team, but it didnt show that night. Hats off to the LUNA GIRLZ....

I was there and all what you say is right on target....imagine if Anuhea didn't hit all those crucial shots WOW!....I also do think that Kona is the better team (on paper), BUT ON ANY GIVEN DAY ANY TEAM CAN WIN....thats why they play the tournament (look at Butler against Duke)......aseyecit Great thread!!!

After watching some of the girls game in states, it is clear that the team with the most talent wins. Coaching doesn't seem as important like the boys games.

For example, a Kamehameha team led by Coach Nakanishi, who has a nice team, but not the most talented team, gets them to play above their heads and were minutes from winning another state title.

So many teams in boys have talent, it seems whoever does the best job of preparation, then applying what they learn to the game, is most successful.

In girls, I see inferior teams with coaches making much more sound game decisions than other teams, but lose due to superior talent.
