One fan's All-Big Island Teams

    Hoop fans,

I don't care much for the watered down East/West all-star selections that the BIIF will use this year. I would rather see an All-Big Island first and second team.

    Here's one fan's picks:

    All-BIIF
    First team (6 players)
    PG - Brandon Bautista, Kohala
SG - Jacob Andrade, St. Joe
    SG - Richie Handy, Keaau
    SF - Mitchel Shintani, Hilo
    PF - Chris Mattos, Waiakea
C - Thomas Fairman, St. Joe

    Second Team (5 players)
    PG - Kainoa Kawaha, Hilo
    SG - Matt Libao, Waiakea
    SF - Thomas Naehu, Kealakehe
    PF - Isaiah Ekau, Pahoa
    C - Dakota Allen, Hilo

Player of the Year: Jacob Andrade, the difference-maker in St. Joe's championship season. He delivered against the top teams, D-I or II. No one did what he did offensively for his team.

Coach of the Year: Harry Scanlan-Leite. He led the Cardinals to an outstanding year -- preseason, BIIF and it could continue in the state tournament. One of the most respected coaches in the state who keeps his team in every game. Remember the preseason win over Moanalua? That team went on to win the OIA title.

Obviously, there are some good players not mentioned. You could substitute one or two others in, but each one of those guys above contributed a lot to their teams and how successful their teams were.

    High honorable mention
    Division I
    Hilo: Scotty Wong
    Waiakea: Clayton Morante
    Keaau: Makana Cazimero
    Kealakehe: Deion Utrera
    Kam: Lanaki Apele, Jayce Carvalho
    Honokaa: Kamu Lorenzo

    Division II
St. Joseph: Will Scanlan-Leite, Sebi Ohara-Saft
    Pahoa: John Byrd
    HPA: Sasha Obradovic

Remember, the All-BIIF teams are selected by the league coaches.

I would agree with all your picks, great job HI-LOW. The only different pick I would make would maybe the POY. I know Jacob had some great games and played well this year, but I think if Mitchel shot the ball almost everytime he touched it, he would probably have a couple of thirty point games. Also, I think Jacob played much more minutes than Mitchel because of all the talent on Hilo. Not saying that Jacob is not deserving because he is, its just my opinion on how I see it.

..@brew.. gotta agree with you.. kindof like prep football.. i remember a while back hilo had a running back and he was getting over 25 carries per game, which lead to him having over a 1000 yard year.. but yet that year had a kid from Kona who only had about 15 carries per game and he still made a 1000..now that's something and as a result i think he edged out the hilo boy for POY honors..

    ..a thought..

Are you guys judging POY off of the playoffs alone or the whole season? Just wondering because Shintani didn't have a really good season...He had an awesome play-offs but not seeing how he would be POY based off the season as whole...There are several other players I would put over him in the runnings for POY...Bautista, Handy, Mattos, Andrade and maybe even Naehu had better seasons imo....Just my 2...

@brew.. I also agree with you. I think Shintani is a complete basketball player (offense, defense, leadership, intangables). Where as Andrade is a great offensive player but doesn't bring the same intensity on the defense. Shintani elevated his game when the team needed him most and when it counted.

    POY East
    1. M. Shintani
    2. R. Handy
    3. J. Andrade

    Great points BIIFHoops!

I agree with your analysis regarding off. def. lead. intangables...Shintani may have a better well-rounded game!...as well as the Handy man!...Andrade more of an offensive explosion!!!!

Hi-low, Brew, BIIF Hoops: Ditto your comments. Shintani was a steady force for Hilo. He didn't have to score to be valuable.

No offense to you BIIFHoops but Shintani isn't that great of a defensive player either...He is on the team that allowed Andrade to score 44...And yes Shintani elevated his game when they needed it but that was what, like 4 games? There have been other players that have been consistently better all season...

Are you guys giving it to Shintani because Hilo won BIIF's?

@bibbyboi, no I'm not giving Shintani the POY because Hilo won BIIF's, but that does factor into it. Because my first choice actually would be Handy, but because they lost in the 1st playoff game its kind of hard to give it to him. If its based on regular season Handy, hands down(LOL).

Shintani did stuggle at the beggining of the season, but that was kind of expected because new team, new system, new coach, new school, and different enviroment. I think in the middle and towards the end of the season they started to play much better together. They started to figure out eachothers roles as teammates. I didn't even have him as an all star at the beggining, but he later elevated his game and became one of the front runners as POY.

Don't get me wrong, Andrade is a great scorer(unconscious) and plays the game with a lot of passion, and if he wins the POY, there will be no complaints from me because he had a wonderful season.

    Peace!!!!!!!!!

Let's Just Put It This Way, If The Numbers Were Reversed Between Andrade And Shintani Would This Even Be A Discussion? No It Wouldn't. If Anybody Besides Andrade Or Mattos Wins MVP It Will Be A Joke. And This Isn't Taking Away From Shintani, He's An Excellent Player, A Likely First Team Player But He Did Not Produce Anywhere Near The Amount Those Other Two Did. I Am In Serious Awe At The Bias Against Andrade. His Team Had The Best Record In The East,Which Is Arguably The Tougher Of The Two Sides And He Was Arguably The Best Player On That Team.

I think Lanaki is a better PG than Kawaha...

He does it all shoot, drive, score, defense

but POY for me goes to Ritchie

I THINK EKAU COULD BE A "SLEEPER IN THE POY RACE" HE TOO HAD A GREAT SEASON, ESPECIALLY CRUNCH TIME AGAINST KOHALA, I THINK HE IS A GREAT LEADER ON THE PAHOA TEAM. NICK FISHER CAME ON STRONG THE PAST FEW GAMES. WATCH OUT THIS KID IS GOING TO BE HARD TO HANDLE NEXT YEAR. (I MEAN THIS IN A GOOD WAY, DWINT (DAD) LOL. NICK YOU LIKE GO WAIAKEA NEXT YEAR? NAH BUT FOR REAL......

Totally in agreement with you is POY being based on playoff's alone or Whole season & Playoff's? Shintani did'nt have a great season he struggled almost the whole season and peaked only the past 3 games, But did do well in playoff's. They are other players that should be POY candidates above shintani and that would be...
...Mattos (waiakea) & Wong (hilo) - Consistant contributors in all aspects of the game from the start & throughout the whole season & playoff's...
...Andrade (st.joseph) - Consistant contributor in all aspects of the game for most of the season & playoffs.

POY for the west side no doubt Bautista.
