Roosevelt is solid. We've scrimmaged Kailua and watching Roosevelt play last night against Mililani, they are in my opinion the front runners for D2.

Solid guard play all around. Great inside presence with Pale. Kid is just beast, fundamentally sound, runs well, great attitude.

They are probably one of the stronger teams in the O.I.A period, at this point in time.

Went over and watched the final games at the Pete Smith tourney. Roosevelt beat Kalaheo in the final by I think it was 7 in OT. I have to agree with JM, they look real good. They now have 4 straight wins over Kaimuki, STL, Mililani, and now Kalaheo. They might be one of the better teams in the OIA period like JM said. The Pale boy is unstoppable. He goes up real high to get rebounds and they had another forward that takes it to the hole hard and knows how to use his body to get around guys and finish shots. The team also plays some real intense D. I think someone told me that alomost the entire team in JRs. They are going to be tough to beat this year.

    5th/6th Place (Consolation Champs)
-Le Jardin 44 vs St. Louis 72
    3rd/4th Place
    -Campbell 58 vs Mililani 44

    Championship Game
-Kalaheo 33 vs Roosevelt 41 OT (17KHS vs 14RHS half)

**The game went back and forth, neither team getting a solid lead on the other. Anger and frustration spewed from both coaches. It was apparent that both sides wanted to chop off the referees' genitals with a rusty carving knife. Crucial mental errors plagued Kalaheo during OT. Turnovers led to easy baskets/free-throws and the exodus of Alex Fernandez (KHS), after receiving his 5th foul, sealed their fate. Nobody was left to pick up the slack and so the Rough Riders eventually tamed the Mustangs and rode home with a win.

MVP of Tournament: Alex Fernandez, Kalaheo
**Damn good player. He can hit the 3pt shots with ease and has great handles for a guy who's 6'2". He had around 30 against Campbell the night before. However, I found this odd because doesn’t the championship team own the MVP title? Perhaps giving themselves the MVP award eased the wound. It should have gone to Kaipo Pale, Roosevelt who had an excellent series this weekend, cleaning boards and making all the other teams posts look like fools. I also found it laughable that an All-Star plaque went to #5 on Kalaheo, who’s name I never bothered to learn. I watched Kalaheo play all three games and that kid never did ANYTHING. He made probably 4 points against Roosevelt (and that’s being extremely generous because I really don’t remember what he did).Heh.Funny.

We all have our own opinions. Firstly, tourney MVP, is definitely debatable. I agree, Pale is definitely deserving, had I a say, I would most likely agree with you.

On the flip side, Aaron did drop 25 the first night on PC and 41 against Campbell. I have the books next to me as we speak.

    His line against Campbell was:

41 pts on 12-18 shooting, was 13-19 from the line, 5 rebounds 2 steals and 2 assists.

It's hard to argue against someone who in a 3 game tourney averages 26 points and carries his team to the championship as not being deserving of a "Most Valuable Player" award. The whole Heisman thing...

In the end, your point, and Pale, deserving; valid.

Next topic, I can also understand the disagreement over Quincy Mason's selection. At 5'10 he isn't flashy. He isn't big. He doesn't stand out. In fact, it doesn't really look like he does much at all offensively. He averaged 3.33 pts a game for the tournament. That is not deserving at all.

Back to Kaipo Pale, he came in averaging 21 points over the first two contests. While we initially had another post guarding him (switched Mason to him following 2 easy buckets and 2 free throws), Quincy held him to 3 points. Quincy also averaged 8.33 rebounds a game for the tourney.

Depending on which game (I haven't calculated our latest PPP [Points per Possession] yet), those rebounds, along with steals, loose balls and assists, can easily translate to a ten to twelve point night.

I can provide mathematical explanation of the translation from a rebound, loose ball, steal to points in the overall scheme of a game if necessary.

Is that enough? I don't know. I also was not a part of the selection committee. I've explained what I do know.

I do think you make valid points. I simply wanted to give you my own personal insight.

Wow my ears are going... Aaron--not Alex. Haha. In any case, yes, Aaron was very impressive, especially during the 1st Q of that Campbell game. He can do it all- rebound, dribble, and shoot the lights out. It was a pleasure watching him play. I just thought that I'd point out that Aaron is crucial to Kalaheo's offense in the matters of distributing the ball, making key plays, and simply just not turning the ball over. But, in both the Roosevelt and Campbell games, he picked up petty and unecessary fouls i.e. reaching, trying to block shots, running through charges instead of stopping and popping. And in both games he fouled out down the stretch, which COULD have cost Kalaheo the Campbell game (that buzzer shot made my day) and DID ruin their chances in OT against Roosevelt. I'm not trying to blame him but his skills would surely have been advantageous during crunch time. As I observed, the other gaurds just weren't getting the job done. I found something...lacking about them. Basically what I'm trying to say is the whole 'you fall, they fall' kind of thing. Just stay in the game kid (mentally and physically). You'll win.

Without a doubt OhShaa. I 100% agree that while his physical and basketball skills are sound, there is some work to be done up stairs.

I can only imagine what it must feel like being him, knowing that you have the god given talent to (here in Hawaii) take over a game against anyone you match up against, at any time.

I don't know how much he respects what I have to say, but I did tell him before the tourney that this preseason he will find out that he won't be able to win every game by himself. Following the Roosevelt game I also told him he had a 3-4 minute stretch where he started jawing with the crowd and lost his composure. It was also our guards fault for not calling out that double high pick Roosevelt started using in the 3/4th quarter that got him his 4th. He is an extremely bright kid. Splendid basketball IQ, just needs to continue working hard on all aspects of his game and he'll have a helluva year.

I heard an amusing story today through the grapevine about how much complaining/crying at the referees Coach Chico displayed at his own tournament! I would say that's embarrasing but coach give probably give a rat's a** what people think! LOL!

    My only comment is..typical chico

To me that's pure entertainment if your a high school basketball fan!
