I'm sure that BBJ, Backpick, Hoopfanatic, BBF69 and other bloggers are alot more knowledgable than I but I'd like to give this a try.
These are my top 5 opinions:
1.) I like Iolani's chances.
Everyone on the Raiders squad is a returnee.
A new, fresh and energetic head coach.
Coach Dean was a player and assistant to legendary Coach Doc, and is an alumnis and was an All-State player for Iolani's championships teams in the past.
I'm sure the Iolani players will appreciate that.
And if the players act up, Coach Dean can "SKOOL" them at practice.
I feel Iolani team captain Kainoa Chu will be "All-State Player of the Year" and "ILH POY" next season.
Chu will be surrounded by talented teammates.
Look for Tulonghari and co-captain Skalman to help light the fire at the "Black and Red!"2.) Kahuku is also loaded with many returnees and may have the biggest players in the state next season.
Look for Akina to compete with Tautofi (Kaimuki) for "OIA Red POY" next season.3.) If Kaimuki does get Fernandez as I am told by good reliable sources. Expect them to make a run at the OIA Red Division. Desmond Tautofi should be "OIA Red POY" and an "All-State" player garenteed!
4.) Kamehameha has Micah Christenson. An All-State player and will compete for "ILH POY" but may not have the team talent that Iolani team captain Kainoa Chu will enjoy. Look for Chaz Bajet to step it up his senior year as well.
5.) Punahou. No matter what is said and done, the fact is that the Punahou Basketball Team is loaded with talented returning players. Johnson, Buckner, Crabb, Feldman, Taylor, Cassidy, the list goes on forever. When we, the public, think or feel that Punahou is about to fall apart because of politics and such, they (Coach Dan Hale and staff) seem to magically pull a rabbit out of the hat and restore order within the team. You can never ever count out Punahou.
I also like Coach Tacon at Moanalua HS and I hope he has success season with All-State player Marcus Monroe.
I also like Coach Marciel at Kalaheo HS and I hope he gets the head coaching position when Coach Furtado leaves/retires at the "Blue and Orange."

Hey 2D Hoop, Coach Furtado did well at Kalaheo and when he steps down it should go to Alika Smith. Well connected in the community and has experience with the University of Hawaii. He is an alumni and his heart is with Kalaheo, his father built the dynasty.
If Smith doesn't get the job, how about Tim Harrison, another Kalaheo alumnus who did well at Radford and Kailua. Marciel is unproven. His sons were too good to attend public school including the dynasty he coached, Kalaheo. They went to Iolani. What is needed is someone who is true Blue and Orange.Posted 1 year ago # -
@Localballer
Sorry, I acknowledge fully that I am a biased opinion.
Alika Smith is well connected in the community and has experience playing basketball at the collegiate level. Pete Smith did build the Kalaheo dynasty.
"Marciel is unproven."
Outside of AoP. What high school has Smith coached that I don't know about?
"His sons were too good to attend public school including the dynasty he coached, Kalaheo."
Too good? Or the family wanted them to get a better education? His son, Walter Jr., do you think he would have gotten into KU if he had played baseball for Kalaheo? Drafted if he played at Kalaheo?
Nothing against Alika, he's a great guy, great player and I'm sure a great coach. Nothing against Harrison. You pointed out his success at Radford and Kailua.
Just don't go saying Mr. Marciel has no experience, when Smith doesn't have a lot either. Yet you colorfully mask that fact behind comments about Mr. Marciel's family? Namely his children.
Seriously, grow a set.
Am I fully qualified to assess the total coaching capabilities of all 3 coaches you mentioned. No. Are you? I'll keep my assumption to myself.
What I do know. Is that Mr. Marciel is there every game day and was at every practice hours before anyone else.
That is called hard work and dedication. He has passion and sincerely wants to help the kids out at Kalaheo. The money earned from his work this summer is what the boys will be wearing on their backs and feet next year, whomever the coach is.
How much more "true Blue and Orange" can you get?
I think that your comment about his coaching experience is unwarranted, considering the duration he worked with Coach Smith.
I definitely feel your comments about his family, his children, and his choice to send them to a private school; paid for by his own hard work, is well, below the belt.

Hey Localballer, the fact that Coach Marciel sent both of his kids to Iolani just shows how intelligent of an individual he is. Don't have him since he has common sense and did what was best for his kids.
Posted 1 year ago # -
Bravo!
JM you have earn my total respect with that intelligent comment!
Well done.
By the way, I am a Kalaheo graduate and I just love Kalaheo basketball's tradition.
But, if blessed with the opportunity to have my children attend Iolani, for this Kalaheo grad it would be a "no brainer."
Again JM, "Bravo" and "Well Done" Buddy!

I'll chime in on the ILH race for next year. To be honest, i don't get much of a chance to watch many of the OIA teams, with the exception of watching them in during preseason tournaments.
1)Iolani - Basically return the nucleus of last year's state tournament team, including Tulongari. Chu, Tulongari, Skalman, and Sheer are primed for solid seasons, while the Raiders have a bevy of good role players who can shoot and play defense. Coach Dean steps into a great situation, and will get the most out of his team
2)Punahou - Despite possibly losing a couple of players, Hale's squad will be a tough opponent. Buckner has grown and Johnson has impressed over the summer. Feldman will be solid at the point, but i think the key lies with Taylor Crabb. If he plays, they're golden. If not, Kamehameha moves up a notch.
3)Kamehameha - Fresh off the state title, Nakanishi will have to regroup quickly if the Warriors hope to return. They do have two ILH all-stars in Micah and Chazz, but they lost a ton to graduation. If guys like Matayoshi and Kaai can step up, they'll challenge for the ILH crown.
4)MPI - Life after Holyfield might not be so bad for the Owls, although they lost a ton of experience. Transfer Matthews (HBA) will have an immediate impact (scoring, size) along with returning guards Kono and Kurihara. The key for Coach Hu will be how some of the more inexperienced players perform
5)St.Louis - Coach Moniz also loses some good players to graduation, but the return of starters like Umu and Wong should help ease the transition. The Crusaders also have depth in the post in the form of Moses Samia. They should compete with MPI for 4th place.
6)Damien - A new coach for the Monarchs hopefully brings a new attitude. Bryan Kaai will build his team around senior PG Tim Smith and F Brysen Lee. Smith, while smallish, can handle the rock and get to the basket or create for his teammates. Who knows, a new attitude could change the culture in Kalihi.
7)Maryknoll - Coach Mello and the Spartans are not far off though. The loss of Tyler Terai stings, but workhorse post Jack Mayer and steady wing Nosal will be a source of strength. If the Spartans can get solid guard play from their two returning guards, they could challenge Damien, St. Louis, or MPI.

Iolani has to be the favorite going into the season, with Chu the early favorite to be player of the year. He's extremely smooth out on the court, and has a solid all around game. Although Christensen from Kamehameha might be the best PLAYER in the state, Chu and the Raiders are more likely to win it all putting Chu at the front of the line. Punahou will be good again too, I also have them at #2 in ILH. Josh Taylor and Henry Cassiday will not be returning, and Sean McFadden is also extremely unlikely to return. Even so, Feldman Crabb Johnson Buckner are good enough to keep Punahou in any game.
As everyone is saying, Kaimuki, Kahuku, Moanalua to lead the OIA. Excellent players in Tautofi, Akina, Monroe for each team, but Kaimuki has the most talent surrounding Tautofi (fernandez, steitzel) while Akina and Monroe are definitely going to have to carry their teams a bit more.

I think Christensen will have a good season, but will struggle more than people think. With hardly any scoring option, defense will be geared to stop him and identify where he is on the court. With basically no one to penetrate, he will not get the same looks.
Iolani will be really good. I think they are better with Warner gone. He demands the ball too long and often made the offense stagnate. They have more ball movement and look to pound the ball inside to Scheer and Josiah. That will create more lanes to attack and cleaner looks from the perimeter.
Feldman is solid. Dowsett is underrated. Duncan is coming along nicely. McFadden will play D2. I am not impressed by Johnson. He has struggled all summer.
Kahuku has no guards. It is much harder to score from the point and Akina will find that out. They have a hard time getting him clean looks from the wings and corners. He has no one to bring up the ball so he can concentrate on scoring.
Moanalua has much more than Monroe. Their two senior guards are solid and underrated. No guard in the state can push the ball like Moanalua's PG.
I see the OIA being a 3 horse race between Kaimuki, Moanalua, and Mililani.

I have to agree with most of you guys. Iolani's the clear-cut number one because of their experience playing together and their depth. Really no arguing with that. I'd also have to say with Fernandez going to Kaimuki they've got a legitimate shot to win the state title this year.
HoopFanatic, I also think that Christensen and Kamehameha might have a little trouble this year. Although they definitely have the athletes, Minns really stepped up last year as the true leader of the team. In any big game, he took over as the catalyst for their offense and created shots for his teammates well. There's no doubt Christensen has the ability to take over games, but we'll just have to see if he'll do it on a consistent basis.
Even though Punahou's going to lose some talent they're going to be quite good. Every game I saw of them in the summer league it seemed Duncan was one of their primary scoring options and they've played well as a team (contrary to the last few years). If they can find a definite inside presence they'll be tough to beat.
I've seen Kahuku a few times this summer at Kalaheo but they didn't have nearly their entire lineup intact so it's hard to judge them. Moanalua seems a little dicey. Their starting five can compete with anyone but as they get to the bench it seems there's a big drop-off.Posted 1 year ago # -
I'm wondering as to why so many of the Punahou players will not return?Great school. The best athletic program in the nation, per SI.Why would they not return?
Posted 1 year ago # -
There are a lot of speculation but nothing confirmed. I heard that volleyball may be one reason. Cassiday and Crabb are two of the better volleyball players in the state, as well as the country. Considering the ankle injury Crabb sustained during the state tournament game in the final moments against Kahuku, one would have to consider a major injury that would prevent either of them to play volleyball.
I also heard of some internal rift within the coaching staff and players. Coach Graham Taylor is not returning. Coach Darren has been sent back down to the intermediate level.
These are all speculations and should not be construed as fact.
Thanks.
