At this point I would say punahou on top because of their success last season(assumming super athlete teo, hillard, makaula, toma, and company return)with so much size and athletizsm, their a team that is going to be very hard to stop. But can they go Back2Back?????
GRADE: AAt second, I would say new power house Kamehehameha-Kapalama because they pretty much have the same roster as last years 3rd place ilh squad.(Derago, Minns, Dumlao, Bajet...) the reigning summer league champs have seemed to develop a new swagger and confidence, knowing that because nearly the whole team are seniors, its pretty much all or nothing.
GRADE: A-And third, dont count out the second coming of iolani. Regardless of the fact that they lose Mounts they were very impressive in the summer w/out marciel(2nd place by one point to Kam). Now they come back with depth including POY contender, Warner. Their young players have stepped up into starting and individual all-star performances(Skalman, Tulonghari, Scheer, Chu) Will this be the team that will resurrect the mugishii dynasty?
GRADE: B+/A-4-10(Who cares!)
These three teams will be fighting for king of the mountain come March, and not only are these my top team picks but I think its safe to say that the starbulletin's fab15(or whatever it is) will mostly consist of players from these teams(like 12).
Can't wait for the ILH schedules and season passes to come out.
PS... hawaiihoops, when are the passes coming out?Posted 3 months ago # -
Good picks Spect101, I believe Punahou will be untouchable with 5 seniors on a mission. Teo, Makaula, Hiiiard, Toma and Cassidy should be the best line up in the state. Followed in 2nd by Kamehameha"s returning 5. Then my 3rd is St. Louis, if they can get thier staff bullshit together! St. Louis has too much talent this up coming season. Hey Spect101, your Iolani line up sounds like a KBB line up, they might be too young against next seasons seniors. Kaimuki with Kelly Grant reloading should be good next season as well.

I think Punahou will be the best if Makaula, Teo and Hilliard play. Anybody know? Maybe we just have to wait till football season is over.

1) Punahou, all returnees are starters. 2)Kamehameha, also too many starting returnees. 3) Iolani, those young KBB boys are in the house and alot more mature than you all think! 4) Kaimuki, too many big man returnees mainly a upcoming junior named Tufoti. 5) St. Louis, returning a bunch of good players mainly McClinton and Gonsalves. 6) Kalaheo, Chico is in the mix year after year after year. 7) Moanalua, Monroe and good coaching 8) Mid-Pac, Yes, Mid-Pac and the Marcus Holyfield show at #8. 9) Kamehameha Big Island, last year wasn't a fluke. 10) Kahuku, because of Galeai's talented play. Please note that the ILH will only take three teams to the playoffs but I have five ILH teams in my top ten.

How many KBB players play on Iolani's Varsity Team? What does KBB stand for? I've seen Chu, Skalman, Tolonghari and Scheer all play on that team this season, 2 will be Jr's and 2 will be Soph. Still pretty young, anyone else on Iolani's farm team (KBB) that should make an impact now? Anybody know?

1. PUNAHOU (ILH Div I) - This is #1 with an * (asterisk). A ton will depend on the 'football' players playing this season (Teo, Hillard, Makaula). If they play, don't see many teams able to match up with their size and athleticism. There are talented freshmen and sophomores who should help right away.
2. KAMEHAMEHA (ILH Div I) - Spec101 is right, they return most of their talent from last season. A solid core of Dumlao, Mims, DeRego and Christenson should be formidable. The biggest test will be the lack of 'big game' success on the roster.
3. IOLANI (ILH Div I) - The loss of Mounts hurts but the Raiders return enough talent and well coached to offset the void in the middle. Look for Doc and Co. to spread the court and take advantage of their overall team speed and quickness.
4. KAHUKU (OIA Red East) - Galeai, Ah Hoy, and Co., could possibily reclaim their place at the top of the OIA. However, inconsistant play and shooting cost them key games during both the OIA and state tournaments. No one can argue their athleticism, but at times the Red Raiders were out of control blowing a few double digit leads late in games. Get that straightened out, they could be a sleeper.
5. ST. LOUIS (ILH Division I) - A lot depends on the new coach, new system and if the players will buy into both. There is enough talent and physical play to make a run at the ILH title. Still too much uncertainty for the Crusaders to be ranked higher.
6. KAIMUKI (OIA Red East) - After a rebuilding year, Bulldogs are primed to make another run to the state tournament. Probably a year away for a state title contender, but will be a tough out as usual. Coach Grant will rely on F/C Tautofi to dominate the inside. A solid backcourt and bench should help.
7. MID PACIFIC (ILH Div I) - G/F Holyfield is the best player on this team, maybe in the ILH, perhaps in the state. Its certainly up for debate but you could make a strong case. The Owls will be one dimensional, but what a good dimension to have.
8. KAMEHAMEHA-HAWAII (BIIF Div I) - The loss of 7 seniors, 4 starters will be huge for any program. The Big Island Warriors will struggle in the preseason, but look for them to make a strong run at the end. Coaching makes a huge difference and its hard to find a better coach around than Coach Wong. Their style will always have them in games regardless of talent.
9. CAMPBELL (OIA Red West) - The Sabers are flying under the radar and with the lost of Mokinano many feel they will be down. However, Ward, Daniels and Gaines form a nice talented core. Guard play is a concern. Look for Gaines to play more on the perimeter to help with the ball handling duties.
10. KOHALA (BIIF Div II) - You might be thinking, 'Did you say Division II Kohala?' Yup. G Bautista, an ultra quick point with range could be the most underrated player in the state. C/F Vujovich presents matchup problems. The Cowboys unique pressing style is always tough. Get on the bandwagon before its too late.
Others Teams to Watch -
MOANALUA (OIA Red East)
KALAHEO (OIA Red East)Posted 3 months ago # -
I'm not sure how to rank the teams this year, but I agree with everyone that the ILH schools should dominate the rest of the field. I think St. Louis's fate this season will be decided on who they hire as their coach. I hear that Iolani has added some nice young talent on their squad also. I also heard that Aiea's top returning player (PG Kory Naole) has transfered to Kamehameha. He should help boost their guard lineup greatly with his quickness, scoring, and ball handling skills. Any of those 3 along with Punahou should be the favorites to win the States.
As for the OIA, I would say in the East the Big 3 (Kalaheo/Kahuku/Moanalua) should be up there, though I'm taking Kahuku to be the beast in the east due to their returners and the bringing up of some of that talent that was on their JV squad last year, man their JV team was awesome.
In the West, I would put Campbell in there. Mililani would be another team to look out for, as their JV squad from last year was unbeleivably talented, so I'm sure some of those kids will move up (I beleive they won the OIA JV Championship, as well as the Varsity).
Looks like its going to be another exciting year.

Spectator 101...A+ in your assessments.
I will also agree with HIFan that Kahuku will be a dominant force this year. Look for Jray Galeai to be a serious contender for OIA player of the year.
