Is the Punahou tourney still run during the same time as the Iolani Classic? That was the dumbest move to make going head to head with the nation's best high school Christmas tourney.

Word was that the school wanted to create a tournament that would rival the Iolani Classic. Great idea. Wrong idea to have it run the exact same time as the Classic, which is sponsored by Nike. Also, your school doesn't get an invite anymore because they have their own tourney to play in. Last year, parents and players from Punahou was complaining about why they aren't in the Iolani Classic, which fielded Elite teams like Oak Hill, Montrose Christian, LeFlore. They were mad that they couldn't play against players such as Xavier Henry (Kansas), Momo Jones (Arizona), DeMarcus Cousins (Kentucky)...and so on and so on. Oh, and I forgot to mention His Airness, Jr. was in the house as well with his high school Whitney Young.

    Note to Punahou:
Its wonderful that you guys want to create an Elite tourney such as the Iolani Classic so hoop junkies like me get my fill of great basketball. But how arrogant can you be to move your tournament from a post-Christmas tourney to the same exact dates as the Iolani Classic, which has already been established for 26 years. Maybe you can do this...since Iolani is already the Nike high school here in Hawaii, maybe you guys can sign with Reebok and get all the Reebok-sponsored high schools to come out for your tourney. It will be great, there will be lots of people come to the tourney instead of just parents and friends because hoop junkies like me would rather watch Elite basketball players than 3rd rate mainland teams.

    Thanks and Merry Christmas.

Not to mention they screwed Tacon over.

Which is the real reason they not in the Classic!

Tacon was the perfect coach for Punahou. He had them competing at a high level.

I did go and watch the Punahou tourney yesterday. I dont have exact scores but here are the resilts and a little recap.

Wilson beat Roosevelt by around 30. Roosevelt was down 5 at half and then Wilson started bombing 3s. Probably hit at least 10 of them. Roosevelt Coach played everyone and sat his top guys for most of the 2nd half after they fell behind by 15.

Tennesssee team beat MPI by about 30. Team was too athletic for MPI. They hung around until around the 3rd and then got blown. The zone they ran didnt help them on the boards.

STL beat Kailua by 6 I think. STL fell behind early but then started pressing Kailua and went up by double digits and kept it there until the final minute. Kailua didnt have much after Lau.

Punahou destroyed the team from Canada. THey were up by 30 at half time. Coach was able to just keep playing everyone the entire game. They looked real good. Hit from outside, inside and their D looked real good.

    Todays games

    Kailua vs. Canada
    Roosevelt vs. MPI
    Wilson vs. Tenn.
    Punahou vs. STL

Actually, MPI lost to Tennessee by 17, not 30. They were down by more than that at times but made up ground late in the game. One of the best TN players went down in the 2nd qtr. with a horrible dislocated ankle and will certainly be out for the rest of the tournament. I feel badly for the boy, he just came down awkwardly and paid a terrible price.

Thanks for correcting me Trailman. I left at the end of the third to go get some food and then came back right after the game ended. One of the MPI coaches told me that they lost by 30. I did see that kid's ankle and it was nasty.

Kid is a Senior but already committed to a DII school in Tennessee.

Punahou beat Wilson HS (Ore) for the championship
45-38 - limiting Wilson's stud SG to 7 pts. He had hit 6 - 3's and scored 28 points in Oregon's win against Tennessee the day before.

Tennesee beat St. Louis by about 30 for the 3rd place game.

    Mid-Pac beat Kailua for Consolation

Roosevelt beat Canada for 7th place.
