Im campaigning for Audi Dante to make the varsity basketball team. Looks like the team is lacking a true outside shooter and boy can Audi shoot. He's open as soon as he enters the gym.

he can play and run the court but alot of kids his age and younger breezed by him in height and speed. his shot needs a bit more 'straightening out'. it looks weird and he needs to be wide open to get it off.
he can't create yet and can't shoot over anyone from the outside either, to small and a bit to heavy for his height.
but he has potential-varsity not yet. i would take jud carter before him. he has speed, jumping ability and can shoot just as good as audi (in shape for full-court).great topic. who else could be a canidate for varsity this year?

Wow!! Hilo will be looking good next year. What grade is Audi a Junior? Is Hilo the team to beat in the BIIF?

Nolan's son is going to be a freshman. He is crafty and has a good sense of the game. Whatever his dificiencies that may be argued on this blog, he will make it up in other ways. I saw him play for many years and he his resume is strong.
As for Jodd, he played for me once and he is fast. He attends national track copetitions and is a very good baseball player. Basketball may become secondary to both of the above sports if not so already.

Audie is a solid point guard. However, in recent games against some of the Hoops Dreams kids he struggled a little bit, (of course Audie is only a freshman and the guys he was playing against are some of the best in the league, Apele, Ohara-Saft, Kagawa, Scanlan-Leite, Janado, etc.)
Should be an interesting year in BIIF.
@Brian
What are your predictions this year for BIIFs? The East should be very competitive.
Here are my predictions.
*I think that these 4 teams can beat each other on any given night.
East:
1. Kamehameha: Heavy favorites, returning nearly everyone, that alone should put them at the top of the league. However, they're decision making as individuals is suspect and I am not sure how they will mesh with Coach Dom. With them keeping everyone and the rest of the league losing a lot, there shouldn't be much in their way.
2. St. Joseph: Lost Andrade and a few solid role players. However Ohara-Saft, Fairman and Scanlan-Leite all looked like they improved their game a lot since last season. With Andrade gone we can finally see how strong these 3 truly are on offense since they have had to sacrifice a lot offensively for the past few years for him. If they get some outside help as well they will be extremely tough. Currently their supporting cast is very suspect.
3. Waiakea: Janado, Ita, Libao (younger one), along with a lot of solid role players should be solid. Hopefully Janado will be better utilized this year as a wing, instead of a full time post player, which he isn't. The two knocks I have on them is post play along with the ability to finish. I don't think they have a guy on their team that can truly take over and carry them in crunch time.
4. Hilo: Kawaha, Berenobis and Wong should be a tough trio. I don't think they have enough consistent shooters, and rebounding will be a problem for them against teams with big frontlines (Kam, SJS). If they can keep the game uptempo, shoot layups, and force 15 turnovers a game, they will be solid. I think that a lot of teams will just sit in a zone and let them fire away all game.

@ D12
I like your predictions and most of us will agree that Kamehameha will have an edge, especially if Jayce plays.
The difference between St Josephs and the others that you listed will be chemistry. St Joseph will have an advantage in defined roles between players while the others may struggle with that. Some players may be out to "Get Theirs" before winning the game and that may be the difference between winning and losing. Each team will struggle (except SJS) with 1) who will be the primary scorer 2) who will be the outside shooter 3) who will the offense go through
This will define the teams dramatically and will have an indirect affect on TEAM defense. Good luck to all.

@Brian Weren't you in Maui last week with Coach Agena? What teams are supposed be good next year according to their basketball gurus? We in Honolulu do not hear to much, thought you might have some insight.

@Brian
All great points, and I couldn't agree with you more. If Kamehameha can adopt more of a "winning attitude" and some guys sacrifice their game for the ultimate goal (winning) they will be tough.
Jayce as well will be a big boost.

Was that the same same team that won the NJB this summer back here on Oahu? They played some very stack teams in that tournament. If that is the same team they played very well together. If I'm not mistaken people here said that was the Kamehameha team from the big island..

if audi makes varsity great for him. the kid can shoot, but how much playing time will he get? would you rather see him play jv and get tons of pt, running the floor, playing D and working on his skills in game situations or riding the pine on the varsity team? well he might get a few minutes here and there but it might be when they're blowing teams out. oh well just my opinion.
also i think there are a couple of other kids out there that are just as good if not better than audi. the carter kid, Judd(?), a couple of kids at Kam keaau, jalen (jace's younger bro), laa, micah carter, the younger nita (cameron's bro) boy at Waiakea. there's a lot of talented freshman out there. it'll be interesting to see if they stay at the jv level or get moved up. stay tuned.

Aloha my Braddahs! I couldn't help but notice this thread so I registered in.
Anyways after watching all of these youngbloodz play, Audi has a chance of making the varsity team. He can simply play the game of basketball, but I would have to agree with mojo because he probably won't get playing time. If anybody should be deserving at Hilo High is Jodd Carter. He's taller, stronger, and quicker than Audi.
Regarding the Kam School freshman, I think only Jalen has a legit chance on making Varsity. Though he could be of no use because Kam's Varsity has a lot of guard play. If any thought, all of these kids should take the time to play jv and then get pulled up maybe only pre-season and post-season so they can get the expereince of the varsity style of play. Yet, the coaches gotta do what they gotta do.@ (anyone)
Has anyone heard from Jayce or if he's going to play this year. Or even that Cabatu kid? If them two decides to play this year, then they will be something special. Though, I couldn't agree more with D12 because it's true...Kam needs to make sacrifices and produce "winning attitudes".Posted 1 year ago # -
Just my opinion, but if they make varsity, take it! Practicing every day against varsity competition will benefit them more then playing in JV games. They have played in 100's, if not 1000's of games, and playing and dominating at the JV level will not be as beneficial as battling every day against the the top varsity players. Honestly, what will 10 games at the JV level do for you!!!!! But, thats just my way of looking at it.
Thanks

@ Dodger
Yes I was in Maui and Maui is still unsure. Kamehameha is up there and King Kekaulike is young but has experience. Seabury returns Dylan King for his senior season. Maui High looks tough but Vega has to play a 4 or even a 5 when he could be the best 2 player next to King. It will be interesting for all of them.
@ D12
I think Kamhameha has a winning attitude that OMG was referencing but not all played with the Warrior program and this is where the blending will become important. Kackley and Wong came from one club and Jayce and Cabatu also played with other clubs and one year with the Warriors. The Key is how Lanaki will mold his players into a team. With the support of the coaching staff, this is the favorites. However, Waiakea boasts one of the better shooters in the league with Janado and Hilo has the streak shooters of Wong and Berinobis (?) so anything can happen. St Josephs is the team with the least amount of questions and could win the whole thing.
@ Swagz
Jalen may be the best of the incoming freshman and we saw his talents at PGU. If he grows like Jayce he will be a force for many years. Unfortunately, he may be the Kyle Pape of Kamehameha. Kyle is a class act from Iolani and waited his turn to play varsity basketball. He scored HUGE at the JV level and when Derrick Low and company left, he continued at the varsity level. Getting past Lanaki and Shaun will be difficult but you never know.
Jayce has not punched his ticket yet ad has not thrown it away as well. Cabatu is in.

@Brian
I completely agree that some of the players at Kamehameha still have the idea that they are going to "get their's," as mentioned above by you which they need to get rid of in order to reach their max potential. Not everyone can be the high scorer, however they can all get a notch in the win column which is something every team should remember.
As for Waiakea I agree that they do have one of the better shooters in the league, but knowing when not to shoot is just as important as knowing when to shoot and his shot selection is sometimes questionable. At the same time he should be taking majority of the shots no matter what. If I was Waiakea my goal would be to get up 20 threes a game and have Janado take around 7-10 and the rest between Kawazoe and Ita since they have no inside presence. If they could do this and hit 10 threes they will win most of their games.
As for St. Joe I think that outside of their big 3 (who will have to all score around 20 points every single game to win), they have very little and their bench is extremely suspect. With the exception of maybe the other big 6'4" kid, Andrade I believe, who should get around 10 points and 7 boards and a few blocks as well due to his size alone. He also should get "spoon fed" easy buckets due to all the attention that the other 3 will attract. The best thing about their team is that everyone knows their role, but their bench is yet to excel at their roles. We will see when pre-season comes.

@ D12
I agree with you about St Josephs team and while they are a bit watered down from last year, the big three will step up but their roles are defined.
I did say that Kamehameha, Waiakea and Hilo will be tough and they will have to define their roles. I also stated that some players will try to "Get Theirs" but I wasn't just referring to Kamehameha. They seem to be under a microscope every year but this year that may become more pronounced due to the success of their Warrior and HoopDreams travel team.
If Waiakea cannot/will not get Janado the ball to score, they may fall short. Libao has become a better player and Kawazoe has seen the higher levels of basketball with Janado with the Warriors. This will be a tough but good year for Waiakea if they find that balance to make wins.
Hilo has and always did have talented and athletic players. They have necer been shy to bring up freshmen players to grow within their system. Having Kawaha, Wong, Berinobis and company will be no different. Who is the main offensive threat? We will see. This is a good enough team to become state elligible if they keep their heads into the game and play together.

Right! With the talent that is around the league right now, anybody can win and lose on any given night. Though it's obvious that Kamahemeha will be the favorite.
@Brian
I couldn't agree more with Jalen. If he does get pulled up for varsity, he wouldn't have that much playing time because he would need to get through Kagawa and Apele. Though Brew made a good point that maybe he should take that opportunity so he can get a feel of the varsity style of play.I'm happy for Colby and his decision to stay. Regarding Jayce, so basically we are waiting for his decision and it's still up in the air? Coach Dom needs to do something or make an effort to get his #1 big man back with his #2 big man. In my opinion, Carvalho and Cabatu is the final pieces of the puzzle to the guard play of Kamehameha.

I'm sorry I dont think im buying the fact that Jalen is ready for the Varsity level. I am not saying he is not good, I am just implying that he is not ready for the next level mentally.
It was nice to see him actually play in the 3 on 3 tourney with La'akea and there crew of boys, yet the stingrays still beat them in that division with 1 tall kid and 4 short kids, and it was actually 1 against 3 as always (mind you these 3 singray boys played in the high school division as well), I will admit his play has improved!
But Kamehameha beat the other stingrays team in height dramatically they should have dominated stingrays. Its the same thing over and over we see with Jalen's age group they have the height and athletism yet cannot win against this stingray boys team and almost lost it to the Hilo boys with 3 boys shorter than them (this audie and judd boy they keep talking about) and 1 girl in intermediate I believe... and they won only because the Ref's did not call the illegal subing and not clearing the ball, but hard luck what can you do. To me 3 on 3 reveals alot of things, especially weaknesses with strengths. Dont ask me who was on that boys stingrays team all I can say is... it was 1 tall kid about the same height as the Kamehameha boys with 1 boy about 5'6" and everyone else below that. Im waiting to see Jalen be the dominating force in his age group so he can earn that right to be on the Varsity team. thats just my opinion. Not belittling anyone just saying Ive been reading so much about this kid that I had to see him play again to make sure it was the right boy, and I will give you this much he has improved.Posted 1 year ago # -
Im not sure but I believe that stingray team is really good for their age, so to make it seem like they loss to a team that they are suppose to automatically win, seems a little far fetched. I believe that stingrays team has some good players, Josiah, Brandon Awa, Saito boy, the Ita boy, and one more kid I cant remember. And you have to remember its not the full court game, which shows you the versitility of players in the open court. Also, 3 on 3 games are really short, and actually gives many advantages to teams that are behind in score. This is why a lot of games are really close. You hardly ever see blow outs in 3 on 3, unless one team is way weaker.

@HawN
I like your opinion, but did you see that kid from stingrays, he's a versatile player that can play any position on the floor. And that's how the ball bounces sometime, that kid was on. Generally, any type of kid with skill can make varsity if they work hard enough. That boy from stingrays will make varsity at his high school (Konawaena I believe). Yes! Height is a big factor in the game of basketball, but if you have the right timing and execution with what you have, you'll win! For example, look at the team USA basketball team. They are young and they have quite a small line-up. Anyways just like what Brew is saying, it's 3 on 3 which good "close" games are expected and it's not the same as regular 5 on 5 basketball. Just my opinion, but it's not our decision for them to make varsity, it's the coaches and it's up to the kids to how hard they work!Posted 1 year ago # -
@Swagz & Brew
You make a great point!
I guess I have been reading so much about this boy from Kamehameha I was looking for this magnificent player thats all. I like Jalens play the way he attacks the basket. I think for me its also the decision making that I look at too. Your right that boy on stingrays is a versitile kid but.... man it was like 3 against 1 in that game and the boys are tall as he was. I guess from my point of view I was surprised thats all. Yeah I saw the kids on the stingrays team and that boy I think someone said his name is Jonah... not sure dont quote me on that.. but he never came out of the game! Ive seen them play full court against these Kamehameha boys as well and the same boy... i dont know about you but I would see if this boy could be on my team. ahh just my opinion. But thats what makes everyone unique in their own way i guess. Yup coaches will decide weather to put the kid on Varsity or not! I dont think its far fetched to see a group of talented athletic players (Kam Boys) play against (Stingrays)good or bad team you never know who will take it and Kam Boys look like a much better team. (again my opinion) Good Luck to those upcoming boys!

@HawN
I couldn't agree more with your point of view and I see where you're coming from. As well from myself..good luck to those freshman boys!Posted 1 year ago # -
@HawN, I agree with u, really good points. All I know that its going to be some exciting seasons, this year and years to come. Lets get it started!!!!!!!
Posted 1 year ago # -
great points guys. i like that fact that we can share our opinions in an adult manner without bashing each other. good job.
well the discussion went from audi(?) to jalen, lol.
who coached the kam boys and who was coaching the stingrays? sounds like the stingrays were made up of a mixed group of hilo and kona kids. and for a group of kids (stingrays) that hardly play together, be able to beat a bunch of boys that have been playing together is pretty good.

@ HawN
So if stingrays beat Kamehameha with this unknown Jonah, versatile but unknown, and Jalen's team defeated Audi's team, does this mean Audi should not play up as well?
Based on your past posts, I know you know who Jonah Bredeson is but I'll play along.
All of you are right about coaches picking players for the NEEDS of their squads and maybe Audi provides that need as does Jalen or the unknown Jonah. The post was based on Audi making the team and he has as good a chance as any. Jonah is probably going to be on the varsity squad because of his athletic abilities and his height. Kona is struggling with height issues and he is a lefty which causes defensive lapses amongst defenders. Jalen has a difficult road, like Audi, where there are established varsity players with two or three more years of eligibility and may have to do a Kyle Pape. Like Jonah, Jalen has height potential with his father a little taller than Diego, Jonah's dad.
Playing a 3 on 3 tournament has little to do with who plays varsity, especially if based upon who won against whom.
We are all partially biased for and against players. No one can deny that. HawN, if you are who some say you are, you know that I am the most biased against my son because i want him to continue to strive and never be satisfied. Jonah is a good player and will be remembered in Kona as a basketball player. It is fine to like a player and have good/less than good feelings about others. That's what Mojo was referring to about a "gentleman's conversation" when everything is on the level and we can speak freely without arguing and just make our points.
I am a Jonah fan, both in basketball and baseball. He doesn't play baseball anymore but to see a young man do everything he could to stop a baseball from getting past him told me a lot about his character.
Good luck to all!
