Roosevelt in in the top ten. They are very good team but they just beat Nanakuli and their next game is against Waialua, wow! Big Island D-I and D-II play each other, deserve ranking. OIA and ILH D-II do not play D-I teams, should be left out of the poll.

Not to really get in argument or anything, because i am never going to get into it about my team, but we have not played Nanakuli yet. And to me the rankings don't mean that much. I think that it helps the team get noticed a little more but It's more for the fans to look at. My kids like it because the voters must think we are doing alright, but the only thing that we are focused on is getting to the state tournament and then focusing on the next goal. I tell them all the time to not even look at it. It's not like the NCAA where we need to be ranked to get into the tourney or have a strong strength of schedule. We just need to finish in the top 2 in our league. That is our first goal, not to be ranked.

Roosevelt, while in D2, have scheduled a preseason filled with many good D1 teams. I think the voters recognize this, thus rewarding them with a well-earned spot in the top 10 rankings.

Roosevelt did have a good pre season beating some D-I teams. They got beat by Kalaheo on a rematch during preseason. Problem is they now play in D-II, not D-I. Not to knock D-II but playing Nanakuli, Waialua, not deserving to be ranked in the top-10. This isn't fair to Kaimuki, Kalaheo who are the middle tier of D-I playing Moanalua and Kahuku. If Roosevelt was in D-I and played Moanalua and Kahuku then yes, but not Nanakuli, Waialua, Anuenue. Maybe there should be a D-II poll.

I understand what you are saying StL, but I also think it's good for Roosevelt. Due to circumstances outside of their control they are in DII. Unable to change it.

So what did they do? Scheduled DI's almost all of the preseason. St. Joe's beat MHS, had a great game with Kam. Hell, we beat Waianae by what? 10 points?

Regardless of their competition now, they and other select DII teams showed they have the capability to compete with DI. Just like us playing tough competition, they are sure to be improving with the seasons progress.

I think it's great that they can get something out of it (aside from the State title). It gives them something to hang their hat on throughout the season, when they get no pub, for something they had no say in. It's a source of inspiration and some lively spirit. I feel for them. You classify Roosevelt, St. Joe's among others, purely on basketball talent/skill/coaching, there is no way they would be white. Imagine if someone you knew were in their shoes.

There isn't a right or wrong, when it comes to this. Just wanted to share my thoughts. You know, if I cut my arm-open bright orange and blue would gush, and they are ranked above us, regardless of split. It doesn't bother me though. I can see the needle swinging both ways and think it's fine either direction.

I think if you play d1 teams and you are in d2 during regular season then you should be ranked in the top 10 in my opinion. The only island that does that is BIIFs...

  11. I agree with obiwan. If you beat D 1 teams during the regular season and youre undefeated in league play, then by all means put them in the top 10.

In the BIIF, D-I and D-II play each other, competitive. On Oahu, both ILH and OIA, D-I and D-II do not play each other. So four time loser Kalaheo and Kaimuki play Moanalua and Kahuku while undefeated Roosevelt plays Nanakuli, Anuenue, and who this weekend, Waialua. Weak. Remember Kalaheo handily beat Roosevelt in a rematch. Roosevelt might just go undefeated playing a weak schedule.

  13. @stl...You still have to remember that Roosevelt still beat good D 1 schools. They beat Kaimuki, St. Louis, Mililani by like 15, kalaheo, And even Kamehameha. If you ask me I think they are a force to be reckoned with. Thus earning them a spot in the top 10.

mike23, I understand your point, but the poll should be on regular season. There regular season schedule is not a D-I schedule. Kalaheo beat Campbell, Roosevelt in the preseason, but that is preseason. Do not understand polls that do not look at strength of schedule, division. Is HPU in the AP top 20? D-II teams (Oahu) do not belong in the top 10 poll. Let them play D-I teams on a weekly basis and earn there right to be in the top 10.

I hear what you are saying Stl. But trust me, I tried to get us moved up to the Red. The problem is nobody wanted to go down, and as a coach why would you want to. You always want your team to compete against the best. But with that being said, there are still some good D2 teams out there. Is the D2 as good as the D1, not even close. But like I said in another post, this year there are D2 teams that can compete with a lot of the D1 teams. Are we 1 of them? You guys can debate that, I will leave it alone. And we don't play Wailua this weekend. I think you have a bad schedule. We still have Waianae, Kalani, and Kailua left. 3 real good teams. I know that you are going to say they are good D2 teams and that is fine, you have a right to say what you want. But again, if I had my choice I would love to be playing up in the Red. And i am sure that the 3 teams that I mentioned above would love to be playing up as well. WE just don't have any say so in where we are at. Am I saying that we would go up and beat all the red teams, NO. We would just love to compete against the best teams each and every night. I would love to have the chance to coach against coaches like Tacon, Chico, Grant, Akina and so on. They are all great guys and you always have to be on your game to beat them. I am trying to build a program at our school just like each of them has at their schools. Thanks for all the talk about us. We must be doing something right to get this much attention. Take Care.

  16. Well said RooseveltCoach. I can't wait to see Roosevelt play Waianae! Should be a good uptempo game! Battle of the unbeatens.

You have a good team, tough, scrappy, well coached. My argument is the ranking of your team with your D-II schedule. If you were in D-I you would do very well.

  18. So you dont think that any D 2 schools should be ranked in the top 10? Even the newspaper has them as number 10.

Thanks StL. This might be one of the only states that has only 1 ranking with 2 divisions. Like I said, I don't pay much attention to it. I love talking basketball so that is the reason I come on here. I know a lot of coaches wouldn't come on here. But I like to read what you all say and chime in from time to time. I don't know where we should be ranked, and really don't care. Just wanted to share my thoughts about the D2 and the D1. I wish it was like the ILH and we could declare what we wanted. But it is what it is. Take care.

Not am not saying that. D-I and D-II play each other on the Big Island, very competitive. Big Island D-II deserve ranking in the top 10. D-II on Oahu stays within their own division, do not play D-I. Not knocking Waianae and Roosevelt who are very good teams, but they play a weaker schedule versus the middle tier teams of D-1, Kaimuki, Kalaheo. Punahou II and Kam II have very tough teams but cannot be ranked, cannot play in the states. How would Waianae do in your eyes in D-I?

Thanks Roosevelt Coach, you do have a tough team that should be in D-I.

  22. If you have gotten to see them play you would see that they would actually compete and play good, uptempo basketball. As of right now there are 2 undefeated teams in the white (Waianae, Roosevelt). Im not saying that they would go undefeated because of course the red is a much toughter division. Im just saying that Waianae is a much improved basketball team from recent years. Im not saying put D 2 teams in the top 10. Im just saying that some of the D 2 teams this year could compete in the red.
