Pahoa being in the top 10 has to be a historical debut for that school.

No offense to Pahoa, but how in the world are they ranked in the top ten?? They don't even have a winning record...lol...

Pahoa has a 10-15 record and play in D-II. Both Kailua and Pahoa do not deserve to be ranked in the Top 10.

I agree that it's a far stretch to rank those teams above many other good teams that did not make the tournament. It also gives good insight as to what voters judge thier top 10 off of...out of sight out of mind.
It's typical for outer island schools and players to only get noticed when they succeed on Oahu...part of the reason why St Joe was in the top 10 throughout the year was because they beat Moanalua in the pre-season. Hilo and Keaau beat Iolani on the Big Island, yet they got no real credit for those wins.

@bigisle, i think Hilo and Kea'au don't get as much credit for their win against Iolani because it's pretty common knowledge that Iolani was missing 3 or 4 starters...

Also I would have a hard time ranking Pahoa in the top 7 just out of BIIF teams...Hilo, Waiakea, St. Joe, Honoka'a, Kealakehe, and Kea'au should all be higher ranked than Pahoa....

I know that Iolani was missing players...that shouldn't mean that the win was anything less. Point is, the "team" Iolani lost to the "teams" Hilo and Keaau. There's a lot of "if's" in sports. If a couple of Iolani players missed the title game for some reason and KS won, could we speculate or dis-credit the win?

Ekau will probably end up being listed on an all-state team. Like I mentioned in another thread, if Pahoa never made the state tournament (which very nearly happened), does anybody outside the Big Island even know or care who he is?

Keeau and Hilo were ranked in the top ten during the year. So they did get some credit for the win over Iolani. They lost some games and fell out as the year went on.

Exactly XLR8. To add to that, Iolani won some games during the regular season, notably against Kamehameha and Punahou when they were each #1 in the state at that time.

If it was the championship game then I believe the kids who missed the preseason games would have played. But it's preseason. Why is preseason so important to so many people. The real basketball affcianados will look at all the criteria and variables before they make an educated decision.

Every coach treats preseason differently. But I have yet to meet a coach who doesn't try to win the game by all means necessary during the championship bracket of states. But I guess when your biggest win is a preseason game then you have to sugar coat it regardless of circumstance.

I don't think the people put as much emphasis on the regular season as it should be. The ILH has it right. The regular season champ gets the ILH title.

The regular season represent consistency and a high level of play over a long duration of time. I understand the need for league playsoffs, but often there are too many games.

What fustrates me is how people rank teams. For example you could have Hilo who beats Waiakea 2 times when it counts, like BIIF first place or BIIF title. But in a meaningless 9th place game, Waiakea wins and now that hollow win supplants the previous 2? Where is the logic there?

I believe too much focus is putting on reading box scores and not looking at the underlying meaning or watching enough quality games by sports fans.

Regular season, Kahuku gets swept by Moanalua. Moanalua beats Mililani in the OIA playoffs handily. Kam beats Moanalua, Mililani beats Moanalua in the meaningless game, Moanalua gets screwed in the rankings. Best OIA team hands down. Wasn't Moanalua undefeated and the OIA champions.

Moanalua had one regular season loss. They dropped their first game against Kahuku at home.

Theres not much difference between 5th place and 6th place in a poll. The only place that really counts is 1st place. The season is over, when preseason rankings come out next year things will be different.

I don't understand how Hilo HS deserves to be ranked in the Advertiser's top ten. They were terrible early in the regular season and didn't get a win in the state tournament. I don't think they deserve the ranking just because they won the BIIF D-I title. They lost twice to St. Joseph HS during the regular season. Due to this I would have to place St. Joseph ahead Hilo HS in any type of ranking.

Let's face it, the BIIF has to be considered as the weakest D-I conference in the state over the past few years based on conference wins in the State tournament.

I can see where you comming from. Waiakea beat hilo 2 out of 3 times, Waiakea won 1 & Lost 1 to St.Joseph (hilo lost 2 times to st.joseph) & Waiakea won 1 & Lost 2 in states (hilo lost 2 in states). What! go figure.

Don't know how they vote or rank these teams, So coo coo, No can win, Season over just gotta move on.

@hoopsdelight You are totally correct. Unless you number one the rest of the ranking in meaningless. The polls are meaningless throughout the season except for the fact that it gives parents and fans something to gloat about or complain about. It is kind of like grades in school they are meaningless when translated over to the real world.

The rankings do not really show how hard a team has worked and improved throughout the season. That is were the fans and parents should be putting their praise.

People need to focus on if the players giving it their all everyday in practice and in the game and be satisfied with knowing their teams did the best to be the best that they can be.
