Discussions have been made about shot clocks being instituted into the high school ranks. I'm for it 100% but the question would be: 45 or 35 sec.

    Your thoughts- PROS-CONS.

Cons: The state is already strapped financially with athletics, do we really want to force schools to buy shot clocks for every single gym????

Doesn't most of the mainland utilize shot clocks?

    Pro's- Less stalling.....

Con's- Cost...Also not really necessary in high school...The reason for shot clocks in the NBA and NCAA is to make the game faster/more exciting, thus making it more marketable...In high school it should be more about the love of the game...not making money off of it....

Gotta have it. Those four corner stalls are the worst thing. Whether it's 35 or 45 seconds doesn't matter. Anything is better than no shot clock. It will also help prepare players, and officials, who intend to move up to the next level. Hawaii high school ball needs the shot clock!

A shot clock is not that expensive. If each OIA team choose to drive 2-3 away games, the school could use the bus money to pay for shot clocks. At many schools, volunteers handle the game book and clock. I don't think it's that hard to find one more volunteer.

If we really want it, money will not be an issue. It's not like a shot clock is $500. If you get a good deal, a school can get 1 shot clock for $59.99.

Is that really too much for the DOE?

Hell the kids can sell 8-9 Papa John's cards, and they got the money....

I think we should do research before assuming.

No offense but love of the game? Who loves watching someone hold the ball at half-court while defenses sit back in a soft zone?

Also, increasing the tempo and pace of the game forces the kids to think quickly and will improve cognitive skills for other endeavours.

If it can be purchased for a minimal price, it should be proposed to the Athletic Directors...

@HoopFanatic, I get what you're saying, but honestly how many games are that slow? I just think adding the shot clock adds another element for the refs to screw up on...lol...

I guess if it's 45 seconds it wouldn't be too bad...I just fear that it will make the game even sloppier than it is now...I know it probably won't though...lol...

    guess i'm neutral...lol...

I feel watching 1 game out of 100 is still TOO MUCH! As for the shot clocks, I think it won't affect the refs. I notice that the refs do a pretty good job state wide on shots before/after the buzzer. The sound is loud and they do it well in my opinion.

I actually feel the shot clock won't affect too many teams since most teams rarely hold onto the ball for 45 seconds to begin with.

They use the shot clock at the Radford Tournament and the clock rarely came into play duing the 3 days.

This would mostly affect teams that just want to sit on the ball and be passive and uninteresting.

Shot clocks shouldnt be used in my opinion because they do cost money and they make the schools have to pay fro it. If you look around not alot of schools have money for shot clocks. There money should be used for other things that are actually useful.Yet, that is just my opinion.

Basketball is meant to be played fast. I am all for speeding up the pace of the game. Who wants to watch a team stall or pass the ball around all game? Boring.

With that being said, if there is no shot clock than it is up the the coaches to install a defense that speeds up the tempo of the game and takes away the teams ability to stall.

Money should not be an issue with the shot clock. Each school should sell some chili tickets. That is what everyone else does to get what the need. lol

@ TDL1, you are telling me that a school cannot afford an extra $60? Really? If their athletic department has so little fund that they cannot afford $60, they should cancel sports altogether because they are in a financial crisis.

The shot clock will benefit the transition teams such as Moanalua. The teams with less horsepower will get blown out.

How about all leagues adopt NBA rules??? I'm talking 24 second shot clock, continuation, NBA 3's, defensive 3 seconds, 8 second etc....

    Just wondering....

The NBA rules are desgned to generate money, and are desinged to accomodate the type of players (exceptional athletes) in the NBA.

The High School Rules are designed for High School Students. Many states already use the shot clock at the High School Level. Once again, Hawaii is in the dark age.

The shot clock cannot shorter than 45 seconds...You still want your teams to run an effective offense, and play mistake free...

How long was the shot clock in the Radford tournament? Just curious...

I believe the shot clock at the Radford tourney was 45 seconds. And in all the games I watched, barely any team used all of it or committed a clock violation. The shot clock would never happen in Hawaii because of funding. Everyone can claim all they want about how easy it would be to raise funds (selling Zippy's chili), but right now they're having way bigger funding issues like trying not to cut programs.

PEOPLE ITS NOT THAT EXPENSIVE FOR A SHOT CLOCK. CAN YOU ALL GET THAT THROUGH YOUR HEADS. HAWAII IS THE ONLY STATE WITH FRICKIN FUNDING ISSUES. WE SHOULD ASK THE DOE WHERE THE HELL IS ALL THE MONEY GOING FOR ATHLETICS? WHERE IS THE S.O.S FUND ALSO? I'M SICK AND TIRED OF PEOPLE COMPLAINING ABOUT FUNDING. TAKE IT OUT OF THE COACHES PAY. I'M SURE THAT THEY WOULDN'T MIND A $60.00 DEDUCTION.

WE NEED A SHOT CLOCK IN HAWAII FOR A NUMBER OF REASONS, BUT REALLY TO INCREASE PLAYERS STOCK IN GETTING TO COLLEGES AND BEING ABLE TO PLAY BASKETBALL. IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH STALLING OR HOLDING THE BALL AT HALF COURT. A TEAM CAN STILL DO THAT WITH A SHOT CLOCK THEY JUST WON'T HOLD IT AS LONG.

Like I said, a shot clock is $59.99 per clock. One RT Bus Ride for OIA teams range from $150-$205. Don't give me that the OIA cannot afford 1-2 shots clocks.

You eliminate ONE bus ride where the kids can be dropped off, and each school can have 2 shot clocks. Anyone who disagrees has yet to give me a specific plan why they cannot afford $60-$120.

Funding? I just gave you a financial option to get the shot clocks. A few schools have not gotten buses for most of their games and they have saved over $1000-$2000.

@hoopsdelight explain to all of us how having a shot clock is going to increase a player's stock for college and being able to play basketball?
