Yes, slow down games which use 1-2 minutes of clock per possession is archaic.

The state can't afford the electricity to run the clocks all game around the state.

The electricity bill would barely be anything. The shot clock uses to little juice to get it running.
And the cost of shot clocks now are as cheap as $49-$69. To make that money, each team could remove a single round trip bus ride and that money (approximately $180) would easily pay for 2 shot clocks.
And, it isn't that hard to find a manager or volunteer to run the clock. Nowadays, almost each school uses managers to run the game clock and do the official book.

The idea is good, but do we really need a shot clock here in the islands? Who holds the ball? Would it be worth the expense?

we should but will never happen to much politics

HF...I was joking. You did come up with a nice proposal though.
Seriously, the better teams in the state can play with a shot clock...but we often forget about the teams that just struggle to set up an offense.

We will get a small taste of it when Coach/Reff Greydon Espinda starts his newest "Youth League" on June 6th (Monday Games at Kilauea Gym). He has invested big money into a professional 30 sec shot clock that will be used in that League.

As a coach, I would love to see the shot clock. I am a coach that loves an up tempo type of game. The way that my teams play, it really wouldnt matter to us. But I would love to have one.

RC, as a coach, I love to see the postgame refreshments and potlucks. I especially love when the parents make homemade food such as fried chicken, chili, and other local specialties. One parent offered to make Carolina Style Smoked Ribs. I am quite excited.

it would be nice to see games like the old loyola marymount style of run and gun and just out scoring opponent and the old unlv running rebels with larry johnson and co. with the shot clock it would be fun to watch and it would bring the crowd to every game.

just coached 5 years of high school hoops in san francisco. shot clock mandatory thruout calif. this is the direction the game is taking. more states are coming on board, and the sooner hawaii jumps on this wagon, the faster our players would be brought up to speed with this tempo. and in 5 years, my teams have never ran the shot clock out! been pushing for this rule and its coming.

I think the shot clock would be great. I would much rather watch a 102-98 game, then a 38-32 game. Jus my opinion. Its great when a team can run their offense efficiently, but I much rather watch a team running and gunning.

HF, I think you nailed it there. The postgame food is the best. When I was at Maryknoll we had 1 parents who would cook up all the food for every game. It is hard to have one in the OIA because of all of the rules of wanting to get the teams out and home on school nights. But our end of the season potluck is awesome. We have tables and tables full of food. We get people that come to only that game and then they stick around for the food (not sure if they bring any though. Might just come for free food. haha) I am looking forward to going home today and eaing at all the places I grew up eating. I might return as the biggest coach in the state, if I am not already it. haha Godfathers Pizza, Sonic, Taco Johns, Olive Garden, here I come!!!

I remember Godfather's Pizza!
As for the shot clock, as educators/coaches, we are supposed to challenge the accelerated or the top. Those are the premier teams.
By doing this, you push the top teams or students to the highest level possible. Then, hopefully, the lower teams will be forced to raise their standards too.
I have never heard of a great teacher who plans their curriculum around the bottom or low achieving students. You plan for the top and you modify to accomodate the lower.
The shot clock needs to be implemented for these exact reasons.

Whos in charge of implementing this rule? ILH OIA board of members etc?...whoever is in charge....make it happen because a lot of coaches are all ready using the scoreboard as a shot clock to run their practices for different drills and game scenerios...specially in the ILH....we also want our kids to be prepared for college.

Shot Clock will be a bad idea...
As a basketball purist, its fun to watch a team run their offense for a minute straight until they get an easy basket...High School ball in Hawaii is focused on the team philosophy a whole lot more because alot of players don't get recruited...
I am opposed any type of shot clock...I am for BETTER COACHING!!!

shot clock in the nba, ncaa and in many, many high schools. more are turning towards the clock. wonder why? by the way, the shot clock makes better coaches.more to prepare and plan for. i like the last 10 seconds on defense, my guys know that they will be rewarded and get the ball back if they buckle down on their D and this can happen every 35 seconds! changes the complexion of the game. got to adjust, baby!

Lovefor, I am for better coaching too. In fact I am for better assistant coaching. I think coach Tacon would agree. Haha.

You can still run a descent offense with the shot clock....your defense will have to step up and more team would have to concentrate more on conditioning and precise offense since you have to attack the basket...it would be fun to watch...just try it fo one season...if it fails...then you can always go back...nothing wrong with trying something new since NCAA is doing it....We have good coaches here in hawaii....plus they are passionate about the game because its a small community....

PLEASE! HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL TOTALLY NEEDS A SHOT CLOCK! IT'S HURTING TO SIT AND WATCH SOME OF THESE GAMES! AND I GET PAID TO SIT THERE BUT, SOME GAMES YOU JUST ABOUT READY TO FALL ASLEEP!!
EVERYONE ALWAYS SAY PREPARE THE KIDS FOR THE NEXT LEVEL! THIS WOULD ACTUALLY HELP THEM IN A BIG WAY!! COACHES WOULD HAVE TO COME UP WITH A RUN/GUN OFFENSE INSTEAD OF STALL OFFENSE LIKE WE'RE SEEING ALOT!! UP BY 2 AND STALL! AHHHH!!
TALK TO YOUR AD'S AND EXECUTIVE SECRETARY'S FROM YOUR LEAGUE. THEY CAN MAKE CHANGES IN SUMMER TIME IF IT'S PROPOSED FOR HIADA(HAWAII ATHLETIC DIRECTORS ASSOCIATION).

@kalei, why don't you like sitting there and watching a team take 4 minutes off the clock, passing the ball with pin point accuracy, setting the perfect screens, catching in triple threat, and finally missing a layup.(LOL) I totally agree with you!!! Teams can still run a disciplined offense and get off a shot in time. But, like u said there would be more running and gunning, which I feel would be much more fun to watch. Lakers showtime with Magic, nuff said.

would like to see hawaii or individual island conferences use the shot-clock, during the pre-season,as an experiment, this year. the coaches in hawaii would have no problem adjusting to this rule. 35 seconds is a long time in basketball!
