Ok, whatever. Be kind, KonaStyle. I played BIIF back in the day. I was not stellar, so even Curt doesn't know me. Big Island rocks!

St. Louis High has tremendous mentors/character builders, going back to its formation. Our Bishop Stephen Alencastre from my native Wainaku, emigrant as a child from Madeira, Portugal, believed in schooling, ergo St. Louis College, & in health care, ergo St. Francis Hospital. His legacy is carried on via Chaminade & Damien High. Happy Father's Day to St. Louis alumni & all fathers around the world. Live aloha, --Curt

In 1846 missionary priests of the Sacred Hearts founded Ahuimanu College [means a gathering of birds] just north of Kaneohe for the education of Hawaiian boys. In 1881, Catholic Bishop Louis Maigret had the Roman Catholic Society of Mary from Dayton Ohio come to Honolulu, whose population base had shifted from windward/verdant O'ahu. In 1883 the Marianists came to run the school in its new location at Kamekela on the Ewa bank of Nu'uanu Stream & Beretania St. The walkway to the school was called College Walk. The school's name was changed to St. Louis College to honor Bishop Louis Maigret, whose patron saint was St. Louis, ergo King Louis IX of France. King Louis IX was born in 1214 & led 2 Crusades, & brought the Crown of Thorns of Christ from the Eastern Emperor in Constantinople & enshrined such sacred Crown of Thorns in the Sainte Chapelle in Paris. King Louis IX died during the Second Crusade at age 56. St. Louis Missouri is named after him. In 1923 St. Louis College bought 204 acres in Kaimuki from the Bishop Estate. And the rest is history. St. Louis High '68 Howie Dunnam 6'6" & Jim Nicholson 6'7" rate among our best-ever front courters from Hawai'i. Just on strength/agility alone, Nicholson was unstoppable. UCLA's John Wooden recruited Nick & even had Nick/family watch the epiphany UCLA vs. Houston 2nd game [Alcindor vs. Elvin Hayes] in box seats. But Michigan State's Duffy Daugherty offered a better deal & Nick opted for football. But Nick suffered thru career-breaking injuries & eventually hobbled his way into the NFL [KC Chiefs] as an offensive lineman [Nick was projected as the next Dave Casper -- fleet tight end -- before Nick's college injuries]. Yes, the era makes the coach. Jim Alegre of Honoka'a on the island of Hawai'i, a celebrated athlete in his time, was a wunderkind of a coach at Radford 40 yrs. ago, but he felt that he had no answer to invincible St. Louis. Now, this is the Alegre who had his outstanding Radford squad the year after St. Louis relinquished its throne, 1969

Jim Alegre's 1969 Radford squad had balance/effort. Alegre didn't figure what Alan Tanabe figured as a 10 yr. old kid whose loving dad flew Alan from Hilo to Maui to watch St. Louis overcome a Hilo High squad that had no 6 footer star in its lineup, vs. St. Louis with its gargantuan squad that had loads of 6 footers [Big Nick was 6'7"/Howie Dunnam was 6'6"]. Alan felt that the best way to beat St. Louis was to attack head on, blitzing from all angles, inasmuch St. Louis played a controlled conventional old style tempo game, based on zone defense. Which is exactly how Bishop O'Dowd beat St. Louis in St. Louis' only hardwood loss in its 3 yr. reign as the greatest ever prep squad from the Hawaiian Islands. Alegre was much too conventional like Walter Wong. Walter Wong 1912-2002 was Hilo High fellow Chinese Beans Afook's acolyte [Beans 1901-1991], but Beans was more on the ball than Walter with creative yet sensible foot placement both on offense and defense. Larry Frank, 6'0" football Adonis, was St. Louis '67 best defensive stopper a la Hilo High's Paul Lee '91, vs. opposing small forwards/guards. Shooting guard Ray Lum St. Louis '67 was a solid scorer but broke his ankle at Santa Clara U '68, the vaunted era of the Ogden brothers/Dennis Awtrey, which also had Ray's respected Bishop O'Dowd foe Jim Kohles. Ray was never the same after Ray broke his ankle. Of course, footballers Larry Frank/Glenn Hookano/Mahi were superhuman athletes who went on to later college stardom. Aloha, --Curt

Our Hawai'i Island just lost one of 3 modern drafted NFLers to a tragic car accident, Mr. Mahelona R.I.P. Mr. Noa/Mr. Unger are the other 2 draftees. Had Herm Wedemeyer of Hilo's Keaukaha not been injured as a pro, Herm would've had a dazzling career. Honomu/Akaka Falls native son Augie Cabrinha of the Big Island played for the NFL Dayton Triangles 1927 [along with our 1st NFLer Sneeze Achiu/Moloka'i native Sam Hipa, all 3 of this holy trinity from St. Louis High/Catholic Dayton U.]. St. Louis High's Larry Frank '68 was a man among boys, its best defensive ace, ferocious heart. Larry went on to a stellar college football career, along with teammate Glenn Hookano '68, a reserve behind Frankie Gonzales at St. Louis High '67. Aloha, --Curt

I agree with u 2D. Curt is a con-artist who takes advantage of people. But he will continue to smear this site with his garbage. Haven't I been saying this for months? Curt is an ego-maniac that is in love with himself. And after BBJ exposed him, we all know that Curt uses people. I think it's time for the administrator to ban him.

He may be trying to trace our IP addresses so he can steal everyone's identity. I can see Curt being an ID theft kind of human being.

St. Louis High is the only prep squad to meet & beat a college squad, UH jayvees. Such disparity is prohibited today as a mismatch.

I wish I could have seen Alan and Ah Choo Goo play. Any footage of them laying around? Today's game is more oriented toward the individual player, but you have to admit, they play a very exciting brand of ball nowadays. A small handful of the names mentioned on this blog are familiar. Red Rocha used to run the community college basketball leagues back in the late 70's after he was pau at UH. There was a season ending tournament on the Big Island every year, played at the Hilo Armory. The 60's are slightly before my time, but I can appreciate the stories shared here. I can also understand the young folks' impatience. When they reach middle age someday, I'm sure they'll understand. Main thing is, we all love the game. Aloha to all of you, young and old.

Sadly, no film exists of Ah Chew Goo & Alan Tanabe. But you may call Ah Chew on O'ahu at 396-8285, Hawai'i Kai, born 1918, whose mind/body are still sharp as a razor. Ah Chew can demonstrate for you his cross leg dribble, which only his former UH player Allen Young ever executed [once, not twice], vs. Seattle U's Elgin Baylor. Of course, Alan Tanabe is in Keaukaha, next to Arnott's Lodge.

St. Louis High 1966-1968 is the only prep squad to beat a D1 college JV squad, our UH JV team. Kareem Abdul Jabbar's UCLA frosh squad beat its nationally ranked [& national titlist 2 yrs. before] varsity squad, a la St. Louis High.
