I attended the Kalaheo vs. Punahou DI game last night and witnessed two very young, inexperienced teams go head to head. Inexperienced on a varsity level that is. Punahou played the game with one returnee (Dowsett) and Kalaheo played the game with one player who played last year (Makaula). Punahou won the game by 22, mainly in the first half. When Dowsett and the other incoming seniors took the floor for the first time, they pushed a 7 point lead to a 24 point lead. The inexperience showed a lot at certain points though, with sloppy play from both teams. Because of the lack of experience, players from both teams need to step up into bigger roles in order for their teams to be successful come January. Senior JK Duncan for the Puns is one of those players.

Watched Kalaheo against Mililani last night. Coach Chico and staff with their expertise will be frustrated with this weak, inexperienced team. Makaula will not be the savior, weak, an airball a game. I noticed Marciel back on the sidelines. It was nice to see him on the sidelines. I hear he took a break while he watched his sons flourish at Iolani.
Was he sons to good to go to Kalaheo?

Are you really asking that question? How many people in this world would send their kid to Kalaheo over Iolani. Iolani is one of the best academic school in the state, if not the country.

The fact that you asked that ridiculous question publicly tells me you are a homer.

You might as well hang with Curt.

One thing I've learned on these boards, is that you can't strut here without backing it up.

Ex. If you aren't sure and aren't credible, you aren't taken seriously.

Kalaheo is 0-4 this summer. Losses to both Punahou's, HP and Mililani.

    "Weak, inexperienced..."

Why else would they be 0-4?

Plain terms: What are you sharing that we already don't know?

That is, aside from your constant state of questioning Mr. Marciel's personal choices regarding the futures of his boys.

Lastly, no one here said Makaula was gonna take Kalaheo to the OIAs/States on his own.

No one said he was Red 1st or POY caliber either.

I disagree with your statement about Makaula being weak also. If there were anyone on the team I had to put money on regarding heart, basketball IQ, and upper level play (regardless if it's d3/juco/etc..) it's Makaula. He has at least a 6'4 wingspan, room to grow and has the most tenacious work ethic. He's also good in the huddle and off the court.

But again, I admit bias towards the boys I've SEEN FOR THE ENTIRE SUMMER, in practice, off the court and in game. I guess that's why after you've watched ONE game, our perspectives differ.

Coach Furtado was a Iolani basketball star and graduate. His daughter played for Kalaheo and did well. There hae been Furtados enrolling and graduating from Kalaheo. Punahou and Iolani have been raiding the communities for athletes, thus a gap in the competition between OIA ad ILH. Look at Kahuku HS,Punahou is taking their football players.
Kahuku players are heavily recruited to D-1 colleges.
Being a student coach, learning what is basketball is all about, you chose a public school.

Other than Chico's daughter Nicole, who are the other Furtados that went to Kalaheo? His brother Dave, sent his daughter to Kamehameha. Did you have a problem with Dave sending his kid to Kam and not Kalaheo? Should he not have been on staff before since his daughter didn't choose Kalaheo either?

    What is your point?

While on the field, court, track and any other athletic venue you can name, ILH schools are taking neighborhood talent and extracting it. Yes. You are right. Had they not gone to private schools they would be attending the public school closest to their residency.

    You are right.

However, for many of us out here, as demonstrated by other posters commenting, not only myself; there are things that trump athletics for growing young men and women in the state of Hawai'i. That is an education.

"JM, how do you know they are leaving for an education?"

I don't. And unless you have talked with each and every parent you do not know either.

    "And?"

If you don't know, and I don't know. Let's just say that their parents should, and most likely do. They work the 8-5, get the breads and shell it out for their child. That in itself puts them higher than your opinion, my opinion or anyone else's opinion.

You are failing to see that you, as an outsider, really have no place in commenting on the upbringing of kids you have no idea about. Yes, this upbringing does overlap with athletics on some levels. But as a parent, or if you were to become a parent, do you honestly only see high school athletics as the lone ingredient to leading a successful life?

Further more, can you say that you know how other parents would answer this question? At the moment, you are implying that you do.

Ex: Mr. Marciel was too good to send his kids to Kalaheo. He's not a true Mustang.

    /thread.

I'm not sure what you meant by this either.

"Being a student coach, learning what is basketball is all about, you chose a public school."

I'm guessing you are either implying I'm stupid for assisting on an OIA squad this summer instead of an ILH squad. Or you are implying that I felt that the Kalaheo boys team was the place to be.

Truth be told it's a little bit of both. Long story short, I want to coach at the college level.

I have no college experience. I understand my shortcomings and am looking to build on it in any way possible. I personally sent out e-mails to various schools, ILH included, asking for the opportunity to assist with any facet of basketball this summer.

Of the few who gave their time to reply, I chose whom I felt would greatest benefit, me. I chose Kalaheo, and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity. However, I can't say that they were my top choice at the beginning. I was hoping to get "any" reply. That is the honest truth. If Punahou, Iolani, or Kamehameha replied, maybe I would have gone to them. I can't say for sure because that didn't happen.

What I do know is that Mr. Furtado answered "Who's dis?", my voice choked up, I stammered and ended up at Kalaheo. I could not have dreamed up anything more fulfilling.

If I knew now, what I knew then, yes, I would definitely choose to go to Kalaheo right off the bat.

But if you ask me to honestly answer why I am at Kalaheo now, I couldn't say it was because they were my one and only choice to be. That just isn't the truth.

Coach Smith started the legacy, Coach Furtado carried it on. Kalaheo has produced Alika Smith, Ikaika Alama-Francis, Julian Sensley, Scott Kato to name a few You can go deeper with the old days of Robin Moss, Wayne Penebacker, Middle ages with Roy Smith and Duane Bradley. The list is deep with tradition.

Now Kalaheo is in a transition, why? players are going to the private schools, namely Punahou and Iolani. Such Kailua talent as Scheer, Christenson.
Iolani is strong because of a deep bench.

Scott Kato, Ryan Hogue, Alika Smith are presently coaching, bleed Blue and Orange. Give an alumni a chance to built the program again. Marciel should not be a front runner because he came back for the summer league.

If the Punahous and Iolani keep recruiting a this pace, Kalaheo (basketball) Kahuku (football) and Kailua (baseball) will faulter.

I agree 100% with you that Kalaheo has an extremely rich basketball heritage.

I remember my father taking me to watch Alika Smith while he was in high school. I played against Alama Francis in high school and usually saw Kato at clinics at Kalani.

In no way am I saying that Kato, Hogue and Smith lack any loyalty to the program, or that their consideration shouldn't be noted because they did wear the Blue and Orange. They were exceptional players. You have pointed this out.

However, I believe in Mr. Marciel. I know how great of a coach he is. I know how committed he has been, and remains. You pointed out that he has only been back for a summer. You are right. However, this isn't his first stint coaching along those sidelines. He was there FOR Smith and other notables coaching at Kalaheo. I believe HE deserves a chance.

We've gone back and forth a bit recently and I don't feel our end stances have differed much. With any interaction, especially ones that ring close to our hearts and passion, sometimes things aren't plausible to change. I respect your perspective, but respectfully disagree.

I do not disagree with the notion that former players, exceptional players, should be considered should Mr. Furtado ever choose to step down.

I do not disagree that talent from the island is being sent to ILH schools for reasons, including athletics, thus depleting OIA schools of players.

But in the end regardless, one cannot compare the level of education being provided by these institutions to public schools.

Only when that happens, will my stance on ILH/OIA athletics possibly change regarding the perspective choices made by parents on where their child should attend school.

Lastly, I personally believe in hard work and dedication. From your comments, what would happen if I assisted at Kalaheo or other schools, faired well, learned a lot and was regarded as a solid coach 15 years down the road. Am I destined to only head coach at my alma mater of Aiea because I graduated there and am not true Blue and Orange? Or true Green and Yellow, or Red and White?

I'd like to think that my ability to interact with my players, tutor them about basketball and life; both on and off the court, passion and knowledge about the game and inner drive would amount for something.

Again, you make many valid points, but in other instances I don't see any room for compromise. I personally am considering the discussion closed. I can say with high probability that I won't reply to similar posts or questions.

If Josiah, Gabol, Kainoa and Ammon played with Kona at Kalaheo with Coach Chico.

And Trevin and Skalman played with Gabriel and Desmond at Kaimuki with Coach Kelly.

    Where would Aaron Fernandez go?!

Get your facts straight. A huge reason is the administration isn't giving out as much GE's for basketball. Check the numbers.

I am sure many people bleed blue and orange. It doesn't mean you are QUALIFIED to coach Kalaheo. Coaching at AOP doesn't really impress me.

Coach Smith had Coach Marciel develop his players at JV before he took a break. Coach Chico wanted him back. I would take the late Coach Smith's opinion and Coach Chico's opinion over a blogger.

Aaron would stay at Kalaheo and avoid the bus ride into town. I too have 3 boys. My first a St. Louis grad and my 2 younger boys are Kalaheo grads. All 3 played basketball. My oldest had the brains and excelled at St. Louis. My second son was all braun and no brains and found that St. Louis was too much schoolwork for him to enjoy himself through high school. My third son watched both of his two older brothers lifestyles and decided to take the easy road of not having to wake up early to catch a bus and no homework to study. I believe that a motivated child such as the Marciel brothers should be at Iolani to feed their hunger. Private school is for the committed, the motivated and the hungry no matter where you live. I have 2 grandsons playing JV basketball. One at Kailua HS and the other at Damien HS. One with the brains the other with the braun.

Aren't Kainoa, Skalman, Trevin and Kainoa at Iolani?
Kainoa is especially what Kalaheo needs, a solid big man. Kainoa is also from Kailua. Those Iolani players would not leave Iolani. Your what if question is meaningless? What if Fernandez had the opporunity to transfer to a private school such as Iolani or Punahou without sitting out a year? Another what if question that is meaningless.

Just to point it out, the current Kalaheo administration is not issuing as many GE's for the basketball team. It's not like only recently Iolani and Punahou have been looking for good athletes.

This has been happening for over 10-15 years. So, Kalaheo is in transition since the administration has changed their GE policy.

Your "theory" about Kalaheo being in transition is very inaccurate. There have been many bballers over the past 10 years who have gone to Iolani and Punahou. It's not like it only has been starting in the past 1-2 years.

So to reiterate my point, Kalaheo isn't letting Coach Chico have as many GE's. It's plain and simple. Please look at the data and trends before you make such an inaccurate statement.

True Localballer, my question is pointless.
I just gave the "how it could have been" without the Kailua boys and Kaimuki area boys enrolled in a private school a thought.
If these boys played their district.
I figured that Aaron transfered from Damien to Kalaheo to win a championship.
He may now leave Kalaheo and transfer to Kaimuki to again give himself a legit shot at that elusive championship.
I then thought up my "what if" question as I gave that senario at thought.
    Awesome thought!
Heck, I think this entire subject maybe pointless.
Never the less, I like Coach Marciel before Alika Smith for the time being.
Wally's coaching methods will resurrect the Pete Smith tradition.
My judgment is based on "knowing" both coaches and what they are "all about."
Hey CouchPotato you sound like you live in the Kailua area, where did you graduate from buddy?

Hoopfanatic: Ikaika Furtado played pg a kalaheo in the late 90's. Solid pg at running a team, but not great stats and bad attitude. I can't think of any other Furtados at Kalaheo.

Fernandez is overrated. The OIA is week and the state in general is week this year. Why transfer your last year of high school when you r already established at Kalaheo! Sounds like he has no Loyalty and an unrealistic view of his own abilitues.

Does anyone know who the big kid is playing for Hawaii Select? I heard he's from Big Island and may be transfering to Oahu for next sseason. He looks like one of the better players that I've seen this summer.Anyone know his name and where he's heading?

Did you go to an OIA or ILH school, your spelling and sentence structure needs some work.

I don't know who the big kid is for Hawaii Select but
looks good in the center position. I heard he might go to AOP.

Fernandez is 6-4 or 6-5, can play guard, forward or center. He can handle the ball, shoot, pass, rebound.
His defense has gotten better and is a shot blocker.
Not overrated at all. I hear a few colleges are looking at him.

Kalaheo is deep in tradition but a shrinking community, Kailua kids go to private school, the talent this year will be limited.

3Deep, you are right about Ikaika. I played with and against him. He could shoot, but really didn't d-up that much.

As for the tall kid on Hawaii Select, the Hawaii Select Coaches said he may be going to AOP. That is ridiculous. It's not like AOP has top notch academics. Plus they play in a bad league. Will he get much better playing Hanalani or other bad D-2 teams?

The kid can get better academics and play in a competitive league attending several other high schools.

Local Baller, you talk about ILH school "stealing" Kalaheo's talent, and now you speak of a shrinking community. You say that these are the reasons why Kalaheo isn't that good now.

Yet, kids from the Kalaheo district have always attended private schools. And, Kalaheo has always had a small district. That is why Kalaheo would accept so many GE's.

However, with a change of philosophy, Kalaheo now accepts more GE's based on academics instead of athletic that was hidden through "so-called" academic endeavors. This is why Kalaheo's talent pool has decreased. Look at the current roster and see how many kids are from districts other than Kalaheo's.

Why haven't you addressed this huge factor???

You can talk to the principal, AD, or current coach, and they will tell you the same to validate what I am saying.

3deep, I believe the player you are talking about is Micah Dunhor, originally from Honokaa. And I do believe he is tranferring to an Oahu school(AOP ???). He was going to play for Hoop Dreams in the ARC tounrament, but he moved to Oahu to play in the leagues, which I think will definitely help his game for next year.
