I heard Coach Taylor of Punahou School got Viela invited to play for Team Taurasi which is a Nike Team. This is why she isn't on Team Aloha.

I believe Coach Taylor contacted Coach Quintero of the California Storm who was Diana Taurasi's club coach back in the day and highly recommended the Lahainaluna PG to play for the Nike Team this year.

And people say that all Punahou guys are bad, lol....

How many coaches from other schools would promote a kid for a national team from a high school team who just eliminated them in states?

Coach Taylor has a heart for Maiki, i bet he wish she play for Punahou lol....He just know what this girl can do, believe me this girl will do well, she got invited cause she can play the game...when Lahainaluna and Punahou meet up again we all know Punahou will win, sometime one person can't win for the whole team Maiki will loose Milika next season, Maeda and Satarata will be back. good luck to Maiki and hooooray to coach taylor

Hoopfan, there are a lot of girls everywhere who can play the game. Many times it's lack of exposure which causes good player to be overlooked.

It is very hard for mainland club teams to see Hawaii girls due to finances and scheduling.

If Coach Taylor didn't talk to Coach Quintero, then no one would have seen her, regardless of how good she is.

She will do fine, but it's lucky that there are coaches locally who are looking out for all the student-athletes, not only the ones who go to their schools.

I am glad that Maiki did accept invitation to play for the nike team, heard that she really was contemplating on staying home and playing for TEAM ALOHA. I also learned that this years team did not even have a tryout. I really taught that Dawnyelle Awa should of made the team aloha last year just by seeing some of the girls that was picked for last years team.

last year team aloha was too many people picked and most of them did not have enough time to play, they should of just took 8 girls, so everyone have a chance to play

@96720: Yes, Dawnyelle probably should of made the team last year, but they already had too much players on da team. I know that Mufi's Jamboree this year was an informal tryout for Team Aloha. Fran also attended alot of the HHSAA tournament games to look for prospects, as well as ask highly regarded coaches from around the state for suggestions. It's a good team!! Good Luck to them!!

TO MAIKI: I hope you do well with the Nike Elite Team. What a great opportunity you have to play with a high caliber all-star team. Enjoy the experience!!!

    VIELA SELECTED TO 'TEAM TAURASI'

Lahainaluna junior point guard Maiki Viela has been selected to play for the California Storm Basketball Club's "Team Taurasi," the most elite of the Storm's travel teams.

Nike-sponsored Team Taurasi will compete in some of the most competitive club basketball events in the country, including the Nike Nationals (North Augusta, S.C.), Boo Williams Invitational (Hampton, Va.); Nike Summer Showcase (Chicago) and Nike Oasis Invitational (Phoenix).

Viela helped the Lunas win their first state title this past season.
