It's proven that having the most talented players doesn't mean a championship is guaranteed . If you look at the programs that have winning seasons on a consistent basis. Most of them have good filter systems or good youth programs in their area. In my opinion this is a vital piece into building a successful program in Hawaii.
(ILH)-Very good Inter. and JV programs plus Varsity D1 and D2 teams. The only 2 advantages I think the top ILH teams have over the OIA are. The ability to accept student/athletes from any geographical area without any terms or conditions such as a GE. Also the ability at practice to scheme your off. & def. for upcoming games. With an alotment of skilled players from either JV or D2 teams, that you can use to scrimage againist. If you plan to just tryout for the Varsity squad at any of the top three ILH teams. Minimum- you better have your basic fundamentals, a strong work ethic, and the drive to get better "as a team" no matter how good you think you are. If you don't have all of these qualities, better to tryout for the JV or D2 squads. They will teach you how to implament these quilities into your game. So you may have the oppertunity to tryout and make the Varsity team next time.
(OIA)- Good youth programs Mililani(MBA), Kaimuki/Roosevelt(NJB), Kalaheo/Kailua(K-Town), Kahuku(they have all around athletes). Teams such as Radford and Moanalua until these last few years, mostly depended on military kids. But during the late 80's and 90's when these teams were consistently strong. There was a good youth program in the Salt Lake area, which both schools benefited from....
But in my opinion, coaches are the main reason programs are successful or not. I should say the whole coaching staff and or system, not just the head coach. Coaches and their assistents are more important to a teams success, than talented players are. I don't mean their knowledge of the game, or the style of coaching. I mean the chemistry between them, and also the respect and trust in one another. Its the same principles that a coach preaches to his team to be successful. Now there are teams who have won and will win championships with pure talent. But I would give up a one or two year run for a championship with a pure talent only team. For a winning program that is consistent and has a chance every year with less talent. If the asst. coaches are treated like puppets and are not respected from the head coach. Then not only will the players and team suffer from this. But the whole entire program will also.
I hear people talking about dis coach, or dat coach and how they don't get along or see eye to eye all the time with their coaching staff. You know wot, I think more times than not they shouldn't see eye to eye. But both sides should be able to have enough respect in the other to voice their opinion and trust that both are working for the same goal. A program who has a coach with no reins, is like a truck with no brakes. The more momentum it picks up, the harder it is to slow down before it crashes..............
