5. BJ Itoman
6. Jen Kaeo
7. Kalei Namohala
8. Shaena Kuehu
9. Brandy Richardson
10. Nancy HoistAll went on to play at least one year in college.
High honorable mention (in no particular order):

Nice list Hi-Low.
I believe Kanekoa is much too high. Wakita was a stud in high school and later on at UH. I also would put Richardson much higher. She may the best local girl to never win states.
I also believe Kane had a better career than Hoist. She played in 2 finals and won one. She also played in the ILH when Kamehameha was dominant. The ILH during her time had Kamehameha, Iolani, and Maryknoll who was top notch at that time. In 3 years (only played 3 years of HS ball due to injury) Kane won states, played in 2 championship games, and 3 semi-finals.
I think Hoist won one title. I believe Hoist got eliminated by Kane in the quarterfinals her soph or junior year. Also the BIIF during the mid 2000's was not what it is now.
Finally I would put Kuehu #1. If you saw what Kuehu did in the Nike Nationals, she is definitely #1. Cockett never competed against players like Maya Moore during high school. Kuehu in many people's opinions such as Glenn Nelson, felt Kuehu outplayed Moore straight up in 2006.
Also for honorable mention, Tiana Fuertes was a killer.
Other than that, you know of alot of players and it still is a good list regardless if I agree or not.

HoopFanatic -- Thanks for your reply. I agree with your assessment, although Hoist was a serious studette in her senior year, especially in states when she went 20-for-20 from the free-throw line.
It's also hard to pick who had the best state tournament as a senior. Of course, Shawna Lei Kuehu was sensational, but so was Kanekoa.
My only hope is that Shawna Lei Kuehu overcomes her injuries and has a great UH career.

Are we talking about entire high school career?
Kuehu scored the most points in a championship game in Hawaii history. She was 9-0 in the state tournament with 3 titles.
She was recruited by UConn and Tennessee until Coach Taylor told them she wanted to stay on the West Coast. She was all tournament 1st Team at the Nike Nationals, getting the 2nd most votes next to Maya Moore. Kuehu is the driving force behind the creation of Team Aloha and local girls getting invites to play for the California Storm and Team Taurasi. Coach Taylor can validate anything I have just written. Coach George Quintero said before injury, that Kuehu was on the level of Taurasi.
No offense, but while Kanekoa was a fine HS player, she was never near that level. The only thing that derailed Kuehu was injury.

HoopFanatic -- I totally agree with you that Shawna Lei Kuehu is the top girls high school to come out of Hawaii, based on her career at Punahou.
My intention in what I said was that Keisha Kanekoa had a brillant state tournament as a senior; and Nancy Hoist had a superb state tournament her senior year. It was not comparing them to anyone else, just a statement saying they had great states as seniors. Not all of the top players that have been mentioned can say that.
The bottom line now for Ms. Kuehu is to get healthy and fulfill her tremendous potential at the college level. If she does, that's good news for Dana Takahara-Dias and UH fans.
If Coach Dana can do a nice job blending local talent with good mainland recruits, the Rainbow Wahine should be competitive in the WAC. I hope when Shawna Lei is done at UH, we can all look back proudly and say she turned out to be one of the best Rainbow Wahine of all-time.

I know that Coach Dana was going after Casey Morris, Kuehu's club team member from the California Storm. I know she left Cal, and possibly ended up at Texas Tech. If they got her, and combine her with a healthy Kuehu and the other Cal Storm player they just got, that would definitely put the Wahine near the top of the WAC.

UH wahine basketball should try recruiting the best island player first...just an idea...they need some strong aggesive player...jamie smith and imai would be good for them....we have a lot of taleted player right here!!!!!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
If they can get someone the caliber of Casey Morris or Sydney Hadel, the other Cal Storm player who just gave her verbal, you go after those players first. These are top 50 players. No one in Hawaii is top 100 last year other than Imai who was on the Rise or ESPN top 100 around the mid 90's I think.
There is nothing wrong with going after the top island player. But unless it is a island player who is top 50 at least, you have to set higher goals and go after 4 star or 5 star players.

The Lahainaluna PG is listed on the roster for Team Taurasi.

How can U.H. Wahine let go Iwalani Rodrigues and last years Punahou point guard Janelle Nomura , Nicole Fu ,Byrd (Radford) Ann Lotta (Kam)and other local talent?..same thing happened to D Low?...imagine if all those girls stayed home....
Posted 2 years ago # -
@ Wildcats, sometimes a university doesn't have enough scholarships to give out to a class if they already allocated most of them to current players. Maybe that is the reason.
They barely went after Jamie Smith and Shaena Kuehu. Personally I think they missed the boat on those two players.
I don't think UH should go after every Hawaii Girl HS player. They should go only after the top few.
None of these girls are DLow.

they should go after lia galderia
Posted 2 years ago # -
Whos the top seniors this year that U.h. should go after? or is there anyone worth going after or all the top ballers are underclassmen?
Posted 2 years ago # -
I think UH needs to go after Tier 2 players from the Mainland. Often JC or international players might also be a good option for the Wahine.
Posted 2 years ago # -
will UH go after Lia...we all know they will...as for this year i don't think they will go after anyone here in the state, next year maybe, one of them will be Kalei from Molokai which was reported she commit to play for UH, this is huge to pick someone from a D2...if Viela from Lahainaluna do well her senior year maybe UH might go after her...
Posted 2 years ago # -
If I was UH, I would go after D. Awa from Kona. She has more upside than any other girl in the state. UH Needs to go after athlets who are 5 tool players, not tweeners without an outside shot.
Posted 2 years ago # -
hoopfanatic if D.Awa has more upside than anyone else, where was she on the final state game...all i see upside down was Anuhea Wall....lol
Posted 2 years ago # -
Everyone has an off game. She is a soph. As for upside, I am talking about ceiling to improve, that is what upside is. She has 2 more years to play basketball. Colleges look for potential in addition to current ability.
It isn't a coincidence that she is playing on the Storm Elite Team. Do you really think the Cal Storm would pick her based on her 1 championship game?
She is a tall, athletic girl who can shoot, dribble with both hands, has mid-range game, good court vision, and will continue to get better.
Who else in the state already has those qualities?
Posted 2 years ago # -
i think Lia has the same qualities, we know Lia didn't too so well cause of injury, those two will come out to be the best ever in their junior and senior....
any word on how Viela is during with the team,i know they already play a few games, going in to Boo William tournament this weekend.....thanks
Posted 2 years ago # -
Galdeira doesn't have the same court awareness as Awa. Her shooting range isn't as deep as Awa.
Coach Taylor told me that Viela is doing fine with the team. He is sitting on the bench assisting Coach George with the team. I will get an update.

thanks hoopfanatic, good luck to Maiki and the team...i see that team aloha won their first game...good luck to them too
