Other than Junior Ale, who was the last player to be named State Player of the Year without his team winning a state championship in that year?
good question...Shaka, wanna take a stab at this one? This will take me awhile.
The only guy that comes to mind is Jarrin Akana from Moloka'i. Like Ale, he was also a co-player of the year along with James Williams from University High in 1988. Not only did Akana's team not win States that year...they didn't even play in the Championship game! He was an outstanding player. Believe he is still working as a player development coach somewhere in the NBA. Got his start in the NBA from Pete Newell and Kiki Vandeweghe at The Big Man Camp here in Hawaii. Jarrin was an assistant coach there.
Not sure if from 1988 to now there was another player that garnered award while not winning states though.
