I know this doesn't pertain to Hawaii hoops in particular, but I know a lot of you guys know the game extremely well, and I was wondering, if you could pick a starting 5, out of anyone that has ever played the game, in their prime, who would you have? At first glance it may seem like an easy task, but it is extremely difficult to me.

    Here are my 5...

PG- John Stockton...his court vision is uncanny, he never turns the ball over, and can score as well, basketball IQ through the roof, I honestly think that if he didn't have to bear the curse of having to play against Jordan every year in the finals the Jazz would have won at least 2 rings...(Others considered: Oscar Robertson, Bob Cousy, Chris Paul, Magic Johnson, Isaiah Thomas, Jason Kidd)

SG- Michael Jordan...at first I thought this was an easy pick, then I started to think twice about it. I mean there is also Kobe, Pete Maravich, Jerry West, George Gervin, Clyde Drexler..but then it all of a sudden became an easy choice again, because I remembered...hey, its jordan...he just has that drive to will his team to win. More so than anyone else on this entire list.

SF- Lebron James. Now I might get a lot of grief but this was the hardest choice for me. I desperately wanted to go with Bird, just because of how clutch he has been throughout his career, and the passion that he has to win. No one else had it like him except Jordan in my opinion. His mid-range game is one of the greatest ever, and his shot may have been un-orthodox, but it was consistent, and consistently went in. Now I had to go with Lebron because of 2 things....his athleticism is like no other, hes basically a more athletic, quicker, better shooting, better ball handling version of Karl Malone. Except he is only 24, and who knows where he will end up, we don't even know if he has reached his prime yet. Scary. (others considered: Larry Bird, John Havlecik, Elgin Baylor, Dominique Williams, Rick Barry, Julius Erving, Scottie Pippen, James Worthy.)

PF- Tim Duncan...There are many great power forwards, and I didn't realize how many there were until now. Elvin Hayes, Karl Malone, Dirk Nowitzki, Bob Petit, Kevin Garnett, Charles Barkley, Dave Debusschere, many more as well...However I would take either Duncan or McHale on any given day. Duncan's complete game is just phenomenal in his prime, his mastery of the bank shot, his rebounding skills, and his soft touch and great footwork are one in a million. However McHale isn't far off in my books. He is longer than Duncan and caused more problems on the defensive end, and seemed to be a better finisher because of his reach. His post moves were just as lethal as Duncan's if not better, and he is one of the few bigs in the history of the game to have footwork better than Tim Duncan in my opinion. However I give Duncan the slight edge because he has been healthier than McHale was, and just has more championship experience with 4 rings.

C- Bill Russell...11 rings, come one, it's hard to pass up. Also he is most likely the greatest defensive player of all time, along with the being the ultimate team player. When no one could stop Wilt, or even Kareem, Russell did. The only downfall was his offensive repertoire, but his defense, work ethic, and team play easily made up for it and always will. His attitude was a lot better than Kareem's as well, so I give the edge to Russell. (Others considered: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain, Bill Walton, Moses Malone, David Robinson, Shaq, Willis Reed, George Mikan, Hakeem Olajuwan.)

JM, who is the shooter for your team when the international teams go zone?

For me personally, I'd take stops on the defensive end and transition buckets over better outside shooting. I think Russell and Rodman at the high post and the 1-3 spots ability to slash in the seams "could" possibly make up for the sub par (when considering the all-time greats) shooting from behind the arc. But again, personally I really would like the focus to be on stops defensively.

If you have followed Olympic Style and International Basketball, no matter who the Americans put on the defensive ends at the guards/wings, they always have some success. They don't really have problems at the defensive end.

It's the bigs who give them trouble, and their inability to hit perimeter shots.

Jordan and Kobe have proven they are not great 3-point shooters in International Play.

Without a perimeter shooter, your team will have problems. After the original DREAM TEAM, if the Americans didn't have a zone buster, they struggled plain and simple.

The original DREAM TEAM had an old Larry Bird who was still effective and Chris Mullin.

And with Rodman and Russell, the International Zones would kill them. Neither of them are know for hitting shots jumpers. And with Jordan and Kobe who demand high amount of shots, how will they share the ball?

If you recall the Original Dream Team, it was Barkley who was the real star. Whenever Jordan played, Daly made sure he was surrounded by shooters who didn't demand the ball (Stockton, Mullin, Bird, Magic).

He rarely played on that team with Barkley, Malone, and Drexler.

Robinson and Ewing struggled. Big, back to the basket Americans struggle in International Play.

Hell Bosh or Carmelo would be a better pick than Rodman or Russell.

David Robinson in his prime was a defensive beast and he struggled with the Dream Team.

Against the various types of zones, more athletic posts who can slash and are athletic are more effective (i.e. Bosh/Carmelo).

Now if you are talking physical specimens like Wilt or Shaq who are superior huge and athletic, that is a different story.

No, I had originally thought based on the OP's post it was simply a 5 that you would most like to have on your team.

Obviously by your account my 5 is the most retarded thing to ever grace the court. But I'm fine with it.

I never picked my team to win the Olympics. To compete against European nations in the Summer games. I picked them because I wanted stoppers at each position, who had hunger to step up in the clutch and who weren't afraid to work on the defensive end. I gave my reasons.

If you want to run me into the ground that's fine. I'll respectfully say that I would still take them, and their ball-demanding status quo's in International play, if there would also be games against other Dream Team's.

If not, we can make another thread.

Greatest 5: For International Only Play.

My impression would be the best 5 against all teams. Which 5 guys would be able to beat any type of team they encountered, hence the name Ultimate Dream Team.

They can go half-court, they can run, they can play Americans, international teams, etc. They can shoot, penetrate, defend, pound it inside/outside, whatever you need.

That is all, not trying to buss ur balls or anything. My bad if you took it that way....

No, you're right. My team wouldn't fair well against International competition. At least, not when considered with other more well rounded teams as selected by others above me.

It was my misunderstanding. In choosing I was thinking on more of an NBA type game and setting. Thus resulting in my varied choice at PF.

I shouldn't have jumped the gun.

Good post Hoop Fanatic, I didn't think of the international game. How do you feel about this group,
    PG-Magic Johnson/John Stockton
    SG-Michael Jordan/Kobe Bryant
    C-Shaquille O'Neal/Akeem Olajuwon
    PF-Tim Duncan, Kevin McHale
    SF-Larry Bird, Charles Barkley.

    Looks good Wassup.....

I remember Barkley being a beast in 92. I think he is a very under-rated player. Also, got a chance to meet him in Denver in 92. I shituguys not, but standing next to him, he can't be more than 6'4-6'5. The way he plays at that height, is so amazing.

About to go to the Iolani-Mid Pac game to meet Jones. Hopefully the game is exciting....

Wassup, the Iolani-Mid Pac game was CRAZY! I believe there was like 3 Technicals called. Big Boy Swanson caught Skalman with an elbow right in the jaw. Then Skalman went face to face with him. It was pretty hilarious. Lot of tension in the game. I believe Swanson caught Skalman twice in the jaw. It wasn't called the 1st time, but it was called the 2nd time.

Mid Pac was up 3 at the half. Iolani took the lead for good into the 3rd. They went up 15, might have won by 10.

Mid Pac was trying to be old school Detroit Basketball.

OK, Swanson is Mahorn. Matthews can be Laimbeer. I will even let the big kid off the bench be Salley. But I didn't see a Joe D, Zeke, or a Microwave.

Big boys for Mid Pac do not get enough touches. If Swanson get 12-15 shots, and Matthews got 9-12 shots, they will be a different team.

But Mid Pac competed very hard and was in the game.

Chu had a 2 handed dunk on a breakaway in the middle of the 4th. I think that dunk broke Mid Pac's spirit.

I like Bird to be the zone buster and I like Shaq because in his prime NOBODY could match up with him in the Post! Heck the NBA changed it's rules(Zone defenses) because he was to hard to handle!
