Devin Nomohala (big and strong w/ good footwork) - Waiakea (Daughter of Debbie Nomohala and Niece of Kalei Nomohala - All state players in the 80's w/ a couple of state titles)

Sifulu (probably play the foward position for Waiakea. Athletic as anyone on the Big Island for her grade. Not as skilled as Lia, but if she works hard enough, she will become an all state performer.) - Waiakea

Another Hanato-Smith and I believe another Awa will be moving up to High School soon. The names speak for themselves.

Kona also has a big girl who is also very skilled.

Hilo, I believe has a couple of 7th grade girls coached by Dave Waihee that are pretty good.

What do you mean the names speak for themselves? You make like we are talking about an Wakita, Azama, Cockett, or Kuehu.

KonaStyle, have you seen Dawnyelle Awa play. She might end up being better then all those players you mentioned. I'm talking about an all around game.

Cockett 4 year State POY 4 State Championships

Kuehu, barring knee injury, would have done the same, nonetheless, she was 3 time POY and Puns won 3 during her tenure.

If the young girl you are talking about can do the same, she will be in the conversation too.

I have seen her play. While she is a fine player, she is not even close to Cockett or Kuehu. She is obviously skilled, but she cannot impose her will mentally or physically like Cockett or Kuehu. She does not have the tools to take over a game by herself. Everyone will say that Cockett or Kuehu played on stacked teams. But that is only half-truth. Nani never got the chance that girls have today. Today the girls have way more exposure. In today's game, Nani would have gotten way more exposure and probably got a chance to go to a bettrer program.

Kuehu played for Kalakaua that beat the Cal Storm when they traveled to Hawaii. When Cal Storm played without Kuehu they were average on the national scene. When they only added her, she took an average club team and made them elite. That is how good she is.

Honestly, that is an insult. Nani Cockett before her 100 knee injuries in high school was inbelievable. Nani put girls basketball on the map. She attended clinics and I think she is one of the pioneers that got high school girls to start attending off-season clinics and camps. She is a big reason why girls basketball is at the level it is nowdays. She could have been the player of the year as an 8th grader. That is how good she was when she was known as Nicole Cockett dominating the intermediate scene. Kuehu led a Punahou team that lost the year before with the exact same team. As only a sophomore, Kuehu made the 1st team with the Cal Storm getting the 2nd most votes for Most Outstanding Player in the Nike Summer Tournament only behind Maya Moore of UCONN who is probably the best player in the nation right now. In that tournament, while Maya Moore outplayed everyone throughout that tournament, a strong case can be made that Kuehu outplayed Moore straight up. At least statistically, she outplayed Moore in my opinion.

So Awa is alright, but c'mon dude, you really think she is at that level. Galderia has way more upside than Awa. I think part of having great debate is to be realistic. I don't think you are being realistic here. You really think that Coach Summitt and Coach Geno will be calling the Awa's to offer a scholarship or show interest in her?

I think she will get a Div 1 ride possibly, but she will not have the top schools calling. And she will not have the opportunity to pick what school she wants and have them all chasing her.

When I played with the Villas, we would often watch a healthy Nani play at Kamehameha with Boo and Goods. She would go 20+ points, 10-15 boards, 3-4 assists, 1-3 blocks, 2-4 steals, and maybe 2-4 TO's. Kuehu during states before her injury would put up similar numbers against far superior teams, not the weak overmatched ones in the BIIF. You remember, Coach Apo and Taylor would often rest Cockett and Kuehu against the weak teams to get others playing time and put more credibility to their statistics.

How impressive is it to run up your stats against teams that are overmatched?

I think Galderia is the most legit player in the state from what I seen.

So please while we all value your opinion, let's be real. Can you back up your argument with data to make your opinion more concrete? Cockett's Warriors and Kuehu's Buffs were #1 for the entire season as a freshman. Awa hasn't cracked the #1 ranking yet.

Shaka, you know your stuff. I think either Nani or Shawna, it's a toss-up. But to put Awa in the same boat, is both naive and unrealistic. She could be compared to girls recently like Tatri, Hennesea, Iwa, Fu, etc. I don't think she is even at the level of Kane or Ching yet.

Maybe she will surpass them, but she isn't even in the conversation with Nani or Shawna if you are being objective.

Shaka, don't forget 37 points in the STATE TITLE GAME! And the 37 points was scored through only 3 quarters when the game was pretty much decided before halftime. If I can remember properly, she had 25 by the half. If the game was close, I think she would have scored more than 50 that night.

Ok, maybe you guys are right about Nani and Kuehu being the best ever. But, I still think that Dawnyelle and Lia will be one of the best players in the state when they become juniors and seniors. If they continue to work hard they have the potential to be the best tandem ever.

I saw Kuehu play in the state tournament(after injury) last year, and to tell you the truth she did not impress me the way you folks are saying that she turned the Cal storm around and made them elite team.
And comparing her to Maya Moore, just my opinion I think is a little crazy.

If all that you are saying is true, when and if she does play college basketball we'll see if she has as much success as Maya Moore. Or even as much success as her sister.

Just my opinion, but if Kaui Wakita was on an elite ILH team she would also be player of the year for four years and have four state titles. She had the ability to score 30-40 points a game, but she was so unselfish.

I don't think I'm being unrealistic when I say Awa and Galdeira have the ability to be up there with your elite players. Awa and Galdeira lead the #2 team in the state in almost every catagory statistically for their team. Galdeira was named to the Iolani Classic all star team as a freshmen, so to say that I'm being unrealistic is kind of naive on your part. Lia is a freak of an athlete, and like I said before if both players continue to improve I see no reason for both of them to have as much success as your elite players in both high school and college.

Vicky Tagalicod before her injury in place of Shawna on Punahou's team would have been scary. No team in the state would have even had a chance. Guaranteed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Upcoming girls on the Big Island, Devin Namohala, excellent footwork and strong, Waiakea will get a good big girl for them along with Sifulu the inside game looks good. Kona has couple of girls that probably will go straight to varsity, the Liftee girl and Kaupu girl. The next Awa to be a contributer skilled wise is in 6th grade, she will be a star in the future. Hilo has some talent with Kuamoo girl 8th grade, but the 7th grade has a lot more future talent. The future gets better for Hilo with a 5th grade class that has alot of talent and has competed with the boys and won their share of games. The team is coached by Ben Pana of the Keaukaha Organization.
Kamehameha has a decent 7th grade class as well coached by Garrett Arima and Greg Rapozo.

Future looks bright on the Big Island.

Anybody knows about the boys side, up and coming talent on the Big Island, I know there is Shaun Kagawa for Kamehmeha and Deion Utera for Kealakehe, anyone else?

I am talking about Kuehu before her injury. I guess you think that you know more than Glenn Nelson who said that in his hoopgirlz writeup from ESPN.com. This is what he wrote: http://girlshoops.scout.com/2/552325.html

    Shawna-Lei Kuehu
    5-10 guard, 2008
    Cal Storm

The Lowdown: Except for Maya Moore, no one left a more memorable last impression than Kuehu. All she did was score 47 points in two bracket games, helping the Storm earn a berth in the Silver championship in spite of the absence of their starting center, Alyssa Brewer, who was out with a concussion. Kuehu glides around the floor with elegance, but then explodes with the ball, on the blocks and around the offensive glass. She has impossibly long arms, which aid her on defense and allow her to pound the dribble on the attack. She also is adept at making mid-air adjustments and can shoot the ball off the dribble. Watch the line grow to lure her off the island.

This is when Kuehu was only 16. That is 1 year away for Awa. Let's see if Awa gets national (ESPN, FOX SPORTS, HOORGIRLZ) exposure within 1 year.

"It was, however, yet another ’08 prospect, Shawna-Lei Kuehu, of Alea, Hawaii, who had several college coaches committed to stay for the Silver final. Talk about a prospect blowing up at the end, Kuehu, who is 5-10, was the Storm’s leading scorer in each of their games and had 26 points and seven rebounds in the Silver quarterfinals, then 21 points, six rebounds and three assists in the Silver semis. Then, poof, she was gone."

Shawna-Lei Kuehu of the Cal Storm continued to show that she’s one of the tournament's top scorers during her team’s Silver Bracket quarterfinal win over OGDL. She scored 26 points and grabbed seven rebounds and finished the day fourth overall in scoring. She had 15 points and six rebounds earlier in the day against All-Ohio. Kuehu has a college body and long arms, which she put to great use at the defensive end. She is a strong finisher who attacks the rim hard and knocks down corner jumpers.

If you saw Glenn Nelson on ESPN's college basketball report in 2006, he stated that next to Maya Moore, Kuehu was the 2nd most impressive player in the tournament. In the game, Kuehu was the only player to hold Moore under 20 points while Kuehu scored over 20. They were matched up the entire year.

So let's see, I have my own opinion, Glenn Nelson's who is one of the most respected girls high school basketball informants, in addition to several ESPN and FOX Sports writers.

Tennessee, UCONN, Cal, USC, and pretty much every Top 25 school was contacting her coach until she made it clear to them that she wanted to go to the West Coast Only.

This is not a debate about college my friend. We are talking about high school.. Shaka and I brought up high school which is what I thought we are talking about.

And, the only thing that has stopped her has been injury. You saw a player who was 1-2 months cleared playing in states only 70-75%.

I guess you didn't see the Nike Nationals, or her 9th or 10th grade years. I guess you didn't see her 37 point title game performance through only 3 quarters.

Hit me up next summer after her sophomore year, if and when your girl Awa has multiple ESPN articles, FOX Sports Articles, and Hoopgirlz articles, let me know. I want to read those. Then if Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, or Joanne Boyle calls Coach Awa, then let me know.

And when Awa finishes her career undefeated in states with either 3 or 4 titles, let me know.

Until that day, I will take the opinion of highly respected coaches, sports writers, and my own opinion over yours, haha..

And as for Vicky, she has never even made it to states once. HAHA! She played on the exact Cal Storm team with the exact same core players that Shawna did the year before. Plus the tournament wasn't as good in 07 as it was in 06 with the caliber of recruits. Vicky did okay, but she did not get the same accoloades, draw the same buzz, or get the same offers as Kuehu did.

Seriously dude, do you just make your own opinions, or do you actually research to get the most accurate and pertinent information to authenticate and strengthen your opinions. DAMN!

Being named to the Iolani Classic does not impress. It's a local ran tournament. They often reward local kids with a token award. Are you telling me that Nomura and Galdeira are as good as many of the mainland players that did not make it?

And you are calling me naive??? Look at the history of the boys and girls Iolani Classic. I can even give you the link if you don't have the ability to find it yourself. The classic has a history of rewarding hawaii kids since it is a hawaii ran tournament. it doesn't mean they are elite. didn't Kyle Pape make it? I guess you are saying he is better than the dozens of players playing div 1 ball now? geez.....

All you do is make up "if this happened" or "if so and so had this" and so on. Can you make an argument based on facts?

Fact: Nani has 4 POY and 4 state titles.
Fact: Shawna has 3 POY and 3 state titles.

Here is your facts so far:

Kona has not been ranked #1 this year.
Awa has not been featured on either ESPN, FOX Sports, or Hoopgirlz.
Prominent college coaches have not called the Kona Coaches (unless they need someone to house a player)
Awa has not been invited to participate in the Nike Nationals.

Care to argue with some facts or data? Can you do that? Or do you just make up what if's?

Glad I could humor you....My Bad, it should have read..

The future gets better for Hilo with a 5th grade class that has alot of talent and has competed against boys and girls in the "middle school" and won their share of games. I figured the topic was "middle school ballers", did not know couldn't add 5th graders in that category although they play middle school ball. My Bad!

    KonaStyle,
Sounds like you are getting bothered by me supporting some girls that I believe will be really good players. I'm not putting down Shawna or Nani by any stretch of your imagination. Because like I said above is that they are probably the best players that ever played in Hawaii. But, why I do say these two girls will eventually be two of the best players that ever played is because I have seen them play, and it is what I believe. Is that so wrong for me to have my own opinion about players or are you the god that tells the future about players. I can't tell you all the things that they have accomplished in high school, because they are only freshmens. When they are done with high school, and if they did not do as good as I think they would, I will admit that I was wrong. But, I won't apologize in believing that these two girls will be special.

What have they done so far? They won a very weak BIIF league. They were the number 3 team for the majority of the season. They may win the state title but they are not the favored team.

So what has Awa accomplished thsi year that makes her so special? I have seen her stats. They are nice, nothing to be ashamed of.

But, they blow out inferior teams, which allows her to sugarcoat her stats. She play heavy minutes against teams that they blow out to pad her stats. That does not impress me.

No one is saying they are not good. But in my opinion, the word special shoudl be saved for the elite, superstar.

In the past 15 years, the state has seen 2, Cockett and Kuehu. The data and achievements show that.

Looking at talent, Kona should win.

But what have they accomlished this year that makes them special like Cockett or Kuehu.

I don't know their exact stats, but I know that they are pretty good. The only thing I can say is that they led a Konawaena team to an undefeated season. Yea, I already know a weak BIIF in your eyes. I might have more to say after the state tournament or I may not. If they don't play well I won't make any excuses and I apologize to you for making the comparisons. Again, I aree with you that Nani and Shawna are probably the best ever from Hawaii. Question - If a player does not get a state title can they be considered an elite player, or do you need a state title be considered elite? Why I ask this is because I don't think that the BIIF has the numbers in players to choose from to win four states in a row, but I do believe that there are players comparable to many of the better players in the ILH.

Wow, I did some googaling and a little more research about Kuehu and I need to apologize too all for questioning her ability and skills. She has unheard of credentials. I based most of my statements on the few games that I watched and for that I totally apologize. She is a Hawaii Hoop gurlz God. And next time I'll do a little more research before making a foolish statement.

Sorry about that and thanks for the lesson!!!!!!!!
