The loss of Crabb and Cassiday is huge. With them, they are unbeatable. Without them, they are beatable.

What happened to Punahou?

Exactly what should have happened. Puns have alot of great players, meshing them is the problem. Too many all-stars....no heart... Just like all the NBA players, take the money and run. Pay me or trade me.. Not the old school, players stayed with one team and became a team.
Sounds like you overlooked the fact that the first game against Iolani at Punahou, Crabb had ZERO,a nada, if I am not mistaken. There total point guard production was less than 12 points.. What created the loss was that Iolani wasn't scoring and the two bigs got some points..Haven't seen the box scores yet, but the two big puns didn't look like superstars.. Oh ya, did you forget the loss that the puns had to Kam.... Must of forgot about that one..
One last thing...teams that are healthy in post season are the ones that last and usually win.. would have, could have doesn't mean anything. Bottom line is that tonight will decide number one.
Sorry if this offends you, but saying the Puns are unbeatable with those two players isn't really a true fact...They are a good team, with more talent than anyone...so the coach needs to figure it out.. Don't they have some outside shooters? If they started making some from the outside, that would free up the two big guys....no threat from the outside means the the Iolani guards can move down to help out on the puns bigs, which they did...that was the difference..

well said Rocky Iolani has made the adjustments.Tonight should be fun.
Kamehameha is well coached and plays hard.Posted 2 years ago # -
Punahou, Kam and Iolani are the best in the ILH and the state. If not mistaken, though Crabb had zero in the first game, didn't Chu and co. get shut down? Crabb and Cassiday are good defenders. Did Punahou win the first game?
Kam was in the driver seat, but losing Bajet was a huge loss. With the loss of Bajet/Kam and Crabb/Cassiday/Punahou, Iolani is back in the race. With those players in action, Iolani was on the outside looking in, third place team.
Remember that Johnson and Buckner are only sophomores still coming in to their own.
With key injuries to Punahou and Kam, Iolani has a chance. Moanalua appears to be the team to beat presently.

Howzit StL. Kamehameha beat Puns twice with Crabb and Cassiday in the lineup, so the mentality that they are unbeatable with these two is incorrect.
Yes. Johnson and Buckner are coming in to their own and will be solid players for Punahou next year and the following. They have very nice games and complement each other very well and with a solid JV team coming up, they should be the team to beat the next few years. The thing, at this moment, they have yet to learn how to step into a "leading" role now that Crabb is out and Cassiday is somewhat hindered (Cassiday started and played major minutes last night against Iolani). Once they become that player, watch out!
Injuries are a part of the season. They could decimate a team and/or they could have role players step up into prime time players. That's why having a bench is key. Punahou has a solid bench. Solid enough to still beat every team in the state, but not quite solid enough to beat Iolani. Can this Punahou bench beat Kamehameha? Maybe. But even with a full squad they still lost twice to them this year.
Have a great weekend, StL.

You are correct, the Puns guards did do a great job on defence, that was good game plan.. But guards from Iolani still outscored the PUNS guards.. What won the first game was there big men. Iolani's big men weren't ready.. but since then they have improved and the PUN's bigs have not, for whatever reason.. Fact still remains, you have to play with who you have, enjuries and all. I haven't heard any whining from Kam about their injuries.... And come on, with all that talent, down 1 guy and a half...sounds like excuse time..
But if Puns come back and win the states, I'll give them credit.. they should be able to, like I said, they have the best recruited talent, oh I mean talent....

Good points BBJ and Rocky. Punahou does have recruited talent, that is why it is dominate in most sports. I am not a Punahou fan, just felt at one time they had the team to beat. To Rocky, who has the BEST RECRUITED talent Iolani or Punahou?
Posted 2 years ago # -
Punahou does..... I have had a kid go through the Iolani system, if they recruit, they aren't that great at it. Iolani's claim to fame is that they play as a team and the coaches drill that into them, brainwash, you do one thing and do that right, no mistakes, it is a system, and the system works 90% of the time. When the system breaks down, is when the coaching is questioned. That is why Chu isn't having the year he should be, cause he is thinking of the team. Iolani is like DUKE, do it right, make no mistakes and win your games. Punahoau is like say, a college team that has tons of talent... for argument sake, like Memphis.... Chu is the best scorer in the state, shoot, drive over anyone (ask the puns about that) and guess what, finish 90% of the time, he can dribble and run forever, if the coaches would let them....Also, kids nowadays don't like the 5 in and 5 out Iolani system. They want to play, not play for 3 minutes and then out, no matter how you are doing. That is another reason Iolani can't recruit well, if they do... Wonder what will happen next year with Iolani, with Chu gone, all they have is Tugalari as a scorer.

@Rocky, you are exactly right. Iolani does run a system. Kam, Punahou and Iolani playing each other through the season, they beat each other up. Iolani is a young team, Tulonghari,Vega, Sheer, Sukamaran will be formidable. Chu is not the best scorer in the state. Good player, but not the best scorer. Christensen, Monroe, Akina are top scorers with good teams. Fernandez and Steitzel are top scorers on weak teams. Iolani will do well without Chu, no problem.
Posted 2 years ago # -
I agree Christensen and Monroe are very, very good.. We could go round and round.. But I agree those players are all very good... I would differ with you on Akina... I think he is the guy from Kahuku, great shooter, but that was all I saw....
So how do you decide the best scorer, one on one like Monroe, Fenandez... Just play entire games like Akina and score from the outside or..... be able to play here and there like Chu and score inside or outside..CHU is amazing going to the hole... Sorry, for a kid his size and going up and over all the bigs he has played against is just awesome....can't let go of that fact...

P.S. Skallman doesn't usually impress me, but to me, he was the MVP of the game..played tough and added points... that is what Iolani needs, a point guard that can score consistently to help out Chu and Tugalari.

Howzit guys. I think when it comes to "recruiting", I believe it goes both ways. What I mean by that is, both the school's and the parents do their own share of "recruiting".
If your child excels in a particular sport then why wouldn't you want to send him/her to a private school, moreso, to Iolani or Punahou. These two schools have the best facilities, the most money and one of the best high school educations not just in Hawaii but in the whole nation.
Also, athletics is the most visible extra-curriculur activity, so the more you win the more notoriety your school recieves which in turn drives hordes of kids to apply to your school as well as brings back alumni and the ever-important alumni money! Both you, me and every one here knows that Iolani and Punahou have a lot of money. A lot. So with money comes more funding for students and with more studens comes more talent and next thing you know...<poof>...state championship trophies start piling up in the trophy case.

P.S. This is a great thread with great debate. This is what this site should be about instead of the craziness that other posters have been posting on other threads.
Let's keep this one going strong!
Have a great weekend guys!

When you come on say that Chu is the best scorer and Iolani will have a problem next year, that is large. There are numerous good scorers in the state.
Monroe-can shoot the three or mid range shot, can drive and finish and gets above the rim better than anybody in the state.
Akina-spot up shooter from the outside, when he is on, unstoppable.
Christensen- tall can shoot over any defense, very consistent, smart. Has a state title.
Fernandez- tall, can shoot the three, drive to the hole, as a mid range shot.
You also have OIA West players which I haven't seen much and good neighbor island scorers.
Again, Chu is a good player but not the best scorer in the state.

Your right BBJ, good debate, nothing personal, all these players are good.
Posted 2 years ago # -
Thanks BJones and StL... I agree, just good old boys hanging out..
Posted 2 years ago # -
Okay, but how tall are Monroe, Fenadez, Christensen and etc... Chu is only about 6'...
Okay, 5 seconds to go, down by 1, who do you want on your team with the ball to take that shot?
Be honest now...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Punahou lost because we are the superior TEAM. Sure, everyone agree's that they have great INDIVIDUAL players, but the cockyness is evident whenever you see them. That goes for the coaches too. GO RAIDERS!!!
Posted 2 years ago # -
@ BJones... What about those refs last night... Looks like they were on drugs for the 2 quarter...
Posted 2 years ago # -
Absolutely right guys! We can all agree to disagree...
All these cats can score, no doubt about that. But of these guys on the list, how many of them can play tough and tenacious defense? How many of them are willing to make that extra pass and give up a good shot for a great shot for another teammate? How many of them have the grit to take a charge for their team? Do these guys make their teammates better?
Offense won't be there every night...that is guaranteed. But the other tangibles can be. How well can these guys perform those other tangibles impress me more than anything else.

If I could a player a set shot, Akina. Given time and can set his feet, Akina is a good shooter. If given a chance to shoot and have to create, Christensen, Fernandez and Chu would all do well. Somebody to get to the hole in five seconds, Monroe.

Howzit rdr. Just wondering, are you really from Iolani?
Thanks and have a good one my brother.

Great points StL...I agree 100%.

These are Key for Iolani,
I Expect Trevyn T to be All Over Micah C in tonights ILH Championship Game, taking Micah out of his Rythum and getting into his Head.
Expect Iolani to get the ball into the "Shooters" Hands, Kainoa C will Shoot the Ball 30-35 Times Tonight!
Because of Iolani's History/Reputation of Developing Great Guards, I Feel that many Basketball Fans Under Estimate Iolani's Interior/Low Post Players such as Scheer, Sakamuran, Vega and Foy, whom All Played Solid Minutes in Last Nights Win Over a Talented and Big Punahou Team. I Believe Iolani will Win the Battle under the Boards Against Kamehameha!
Good Luck to Both Teams!
See Everyone at the Game!Posted 2 years ago # -
Punahou has been the 4th or 5th best team in the state for a month now. Their loss to Iolani should not be a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention.
