What is a good coach?

If a team hasn't been doing well for MANY years always coming out as the underdog, always maybe only winning 1 or 2 games a season; wouldn't you think the coach would do something about it? Maybe try something new? Wouldn't you think the AD would do something about it also?

If the coach says it's because the boys don't produce; isn't it a failure on his part also because it's obvious that he's not producing as a coach?

How's it bballjones! Eh, I think we might be related...we get the same last name! LOL!

Anyway, in reference to your question, I don't think there is one correct answer. A good coach with his philosophies and style at one program may not be as effective at another program. Of course the first thing a person would consider if a coach is good is his wins and losses record.

But what if a coach isn't successfull in picking up wins but let's say 100% of his players are graduating from high school AND entering college. In my humble opinion, I would say that this coach is doing a great job.

I am a HUGE fan of Coach Mike Kzryzweski from Duke University. I have read a few of his books that talk about his coaching style and philosophy and I try to take some of that and incorporate it into my coaching style as well. One aspect I take to heart from reading Coach K's books is that he said a coaches #1 duty, no matter the sport, no matter the age level is to inspire his players. Inspire his players to achieve a level that they have never reached before. In doing so, the player becomes a better person off the playing field or court as well.

    Have a great Sunday!

Dat is going on rite now in Ynae... Da girls hi sku coach has been dea for a wile - almost 10 years. Last year, lst time in red division... no wins at all. Dis year, probably da best year he eva had... From all da years he been dea, this was The most wins eva unda his belt... 3 wins.

Foa couple of years, da jv girls team neva had a coach, almost neva had a team... Dis same coach ends up coaching both teams, not wanting help from parents and former players... In fact, almost did not have a jv team....

Personally, I feel that the head coach and the athletic director should place the girls teams in summer leagues, clinics, and tournaments state wide... but dis not happening....

Dis gives parents another reason why dey should try sending their girls to other public schools?... And i am one of em...

A good coach is somebody that the players trust and buy into his program. A good coach knows the strengths and weaknesses of his players and uses those skills accordingly. A good coach has their players knowing their roles. If your role isn't fulfilled or an attitude displayed, you have both negative and positive discipline. Praise when needed, laps or some benching also needed. In Basketball, you have to play your role. If your role isn't played, hurts the team. Lastly, sportsmanship. Win or Lose, you handle it with sportsmanship. Coaches have to carry themselves well, not loosing patience, show the ship is sinking. A cool thinking coach will rub off on its players. Players will be patient and will carry this later in life.

Howzit BasketballJones! My braddah from anada mada! LOL!

I agree with all of you. I know a coach that doesn't fit any of these descriptions. Infact the coach I know is this: unethical; leads with fear, uses profanity and disrespect; and practices verbal, physical as well as emotional abuse.

His team maybe wins 1 or 2 games each season.

That's unfortunate. I wonder who's more at fault, the coach or the AD who allows this coach to be there?

...simple.. a good coach is one who wins games, but also wins the hearts of his players, school, and community..

    ..just a thought..

@BasketballJones: Parents have voiced their concerns to the AD on numerous occasions starting as early as last season but nothing has been done about it.

Parents have voiced their concerns to the coach on numerous occasions only for him to tell the players that if another parent says anything the player will be kicked off the team or benched.

a good coach win with average talent. He finds a way to bring the best out of the kids. You gotta win if u wanna keep your job at any real type of program but remember this is hawaii so I think the ohana rule comes in and if that is true then they dont care if they win they just keep there jobs

Who even cares about Waianae Basketball, especially the girls. Just wondering if the waianae girls coach (mentioned above) was there for about 10 years, and they were in the red division, doesn't that mean they had to win more than 3 games to move up? So how can that be his most wins ever? Do they even play ball down that end of the island? yeah I know their boys team has a chance to go to the D2 OIA Title game. But the only sport that Waianae should be mentioned with is football, and they can't even do that right anymore. I still don't think posters should be dissin' specific people/student athletes, just because you don't mention their name (but mention their school and position) it doesn't make it a general statement.

I agree, a coach is all of the above, but what I feel is missing is that the coach has a responsibility to DEVELOP the player to be better. Locking them into a system or only to their strengths helps the coach win, but the kids don't necessarily win..

    Just my two cents..
