it seems that people on and off the big island have put Konawaena girls bb team so out of reach that they think there unbeatable. as Rwmdn31 so elequently corrected me on another blog. "any team can be beat on any given day". so is it that Konawaena has all this talent, that they will make this saying incorrect? i've seen them play in the preseason and was not impressed. read about them in the Tribune, how they are winning by large margins on the west side. against what kind of caliber teams? its kind of to bad this year is split, east and west, because if it wasn't there could be some truth as to how good or bad Konawaena girls bb team relly is.
and what about the other islands? don't they have girls bb teams that could put a damper on Kona's hype?

i was just wondering. things that make you go, Hmm?

Their talent level is unmatched, they have good enough size inside and they are good fundamentally. Dawnyelle Awa seems very intelligent on the court and if they can stay healthy, especially Galdeira, I don't see them losing at all.

The talent level is severely down this year. Plus they can play together the entire year. And I believe they have a feeder program into their school which 99% of the state does not have.

HYPE! Not much hype here! everyone knows that the level of competition is LOW on the west side. If im not mistaken i believe Kamehameha has a feeder program as well. Im not saying all go to Kamehameha High you have to be hawaiian to go there. But as for Konawaena they have raised there fair share of kids that have gone into other schools. It will be most interesting to see them play in the playoffs against the east side, now thats a game worth watching.

Konawaena girls basketball program does have a feeder or should I say their coach is active in the basketball community. Coach Awa had found a way to cultivate a basketball program in the older section of West Hi. These girls play together year round. They have a set plays, not many, and they run them well. Discipline, loyalty, respect and love has everything to do with their continued success.

It's the humble things I SEE

    yeah OLDG Tru dat...
Stingrays play ball year round, but... the pick of the litter per say teams are SLIM in Kona. Ultimataley you have stingrays who stay competitive, or join one of the other club basketball teams that dont love the game as much as you do or do love the game but are not as comitted to the kids. Your right about Loyalty, respect and love and a great support of parents that contribute to there childrens success. These kids come from all over and not all have played with Stingrays all there lives, but the love for the game is there driving force.
like I said they have no HYPE going on, and if there is its all Media.

aseyecit...what would Kona have to do to impress you in the preseason? They lost 1 game to a nice mainland team and won every other game, including the better teams in the state. Yes the BIIF west is down, but it aint their fault.

HawN...when Kona goes to the playoffs, it aint gonna get that much better. Who's gonna challenge them on the East? Waiakea maybe, but my opinion is that they're 20 points better than the Warriors.

Lia's a great player, but I think Kona will survive without her. They are a better team with her, but other players step up while she's out. I think at the BIIF level, nobody will touch them with or without Lia. At the state level, BIIFViking...you're right, teams have a chance.

Lia will be missed by Kona. Although Kona is still a good team, without Lia they will be beatable. I think Lia will be missed more on the defensive end, then the offensive end. Although at times she seems like she's not totally into the game, girls still fear her when she is playing defense. She anticipates passes as well as anyone in the state and when she decides to play hard nose defense on someone she locks them down. Girls think they have a clear passing lane and next thing they know, Lia is streaking down the other way for a lay-up. Kona is still the team to beat, but without Lia teams may have a better shot at upsetting them.

    Just my thoughts

its gonna be better than what weve been watching here on the west side. (No offense) but it aint worth going to the games on the west side u can pretty much predict who will take it and who wont. The Hilo games on the other hand thats exciting.
as for them not having Lia... the girls are playing well without Lia, I know its killing her not to play with the team, but the girls are stepping it up and there 6th man aint to shabby herself excellent defense. BUT Lia aint out so dont count her out to soon.

HawN...no doubt that Westside games are not worth going to. Kealakehe and Kohala varsity would get beat by Kona's 5 player jv team. Honokaa and HPA are the better competition, but not really a threat to beat Kona. The Eastside seems to have competitve games, but with all due respect, it just means all the "good" teams over there are just evenly mediocre in my opinion.

Brew, I agree that Lia's value to the team is being active in passing lanes and agressive on defense. Her athleticism around the basket and rebounding is also something that she brings to the table. Anytime the reigning state player of the year is not playing, you obviously miss that player. I agree with HawN, she'll be back sooner than later.

I think konawaena is such a good team because they are patient with the ball, make good passes, their fast and they have some big people on their team and they play smart, but that's just my oppinion

They are so good cuz they are usually physically and athletically superior to their opponents.

it just seems that everytime the state tourney comes up, theres talk about how Kona is unbeatable with Lia and her crew. IMO, Lia is to Kona as Kami is probably to Waiakea.
like i mentioned, i've seen Lia play in a preseason game where Kona played a team from the mainland. Kona did win, but during the game Lia had lost her composure becuase the player guarding her was playing her tough, and Lia couldn't get her way. when she was, unfortunatelly called for an offense foul she was taken out of game, she ran directly into the locker room with, looks like she was "crying"! now i was on the other side of the court, width wise, and her actions wasn't one of a highly reguarded, top level, maybe four time state mvp. i know a lot of talk has been about, as SHOOTZbrah put it, "DICIPLINE!!!!", but it just didn't seem quite what all the "hype" is about.
i wish all the BIFF playoff teams weel in thier drive for the title. but ALWAYS remember: "any team can be beat on any given day"!

Lia will play during the BIIF's and HHSAA! Kona is just resting her up for it! Which is probably the best move for this team. There giving their bench experience!

You know whats funny huh... i dont think Lia looks to win the MVP or any other award she merely plays because she can. I know that any other coach who has asked her to play on there traveling team will agree that her athleticism is what gets her noticed, She aint perfect but then again who is? All kids who have had a bad game will get emotional i see it all the time and Lia is not the exception. Many will scope her out because many people put so much hype to it, this girl is like any other girl out there, she just needs to be guided and developed and I think her coach does a great job of doing it. Play defense on her that will help her reflect, but commmon she is not the only one on the team. (my thoughts)

No judgement here, just a question. Is it within state/league rules to keep a team intact year round?

So, is there a BIIF rule about how many players from one school can play on a team outside of the league season? Is that coach allowed to work with those players? I know that some leagues have these type of limits. Does the BIIF?

    Thanks aseyecit & SHOOTzbrah

Hey db, The BIIF has loop holes. But there are no rules saying you cannot keep ur teams together once season is done kids go back to there club teams. Summer time is usually when coaches here set up travel teams to travel in the mainland some of the players here may get together with the Oahu teams to create an all-star teams or just simply keeping there club teams together as a team to compete in the mainland. Some High School coaches do coach there high school ballers in club teams and there are no rules as to limits of players from the same school that can play on the same team. I know ILH has rules set up so that only certain amount of players from the same school can play on certain teams its crazy... but understandable.

Every league has "loop holes." I'm not an expert on the situation in Kona but the perception by some on Oahu is that keeping girls together year round with the same coach is, well, against the "spirit" of fair play within a state competition.

I think the times are changing though and perhaps the rules should too. Club sports are growing in importance as more players play year round in their sport of choice-- Soccer, Basketball, Baseball. Kids are encouraged to "specialize" earlier and earlier and the lure of a "scholarship" is dangled in front of them. Not like when we grew up, when there were "seasons" and they didn't overlap. You could play three sports and were encouraged to. Now, if you haven't chosen your one sport by age 12 you're told that you are behind the 8 ball.

Perhaps, we're headed to a European model where school is for academic learning and you go to your local "club" for sports competition. It's not a bad model. Clubs take care of the fields, equipment, coaching, and run all levels from 5 years old to elder competition.

    Hey db...

tru... tru.... well its funny because its not only Kona that does it, you have our Hilo Kamehameha as well as a bunch of other teams on the Big Island, and you have a great point there. Whats good for one island should be spread a broad as well.

    Great insight!
