whats wrong with mid pac girls

After talking to several coaches around the island, many coaches feel that behind Konawaena, Mid Pacific girls have the most talent in the state.
So, they haven't been to states since 2000 I think. Part of it has to be the coaching. It seems the girls are not playing to their potential. Maybe they have a mental block against Punahou and Iolani. Those 2 programs have a rich history over the past 15 years.
Often, coaches need to change the culture of a program. It seems that everytime a new head coach is hired for Mid Pacific Girls, Lee, to Cheng, to Masuda, they build off the previous coach's program.
They seem to incorporate some stuff from the previous coach. I think that Mid Pacific needs a complete overhaul.
They need to bring in a young and hungry coach, even if that coach doesn't have as much experience. Then that coach needs to change everything and hopefully that will start a new book, not just adding pages to the end of an underachieving book.

What do you mean suggestions? Pertaining to what?

I agree for both Boys and Girls. They need to hire Coaches that have been around town... meaning off season, outside leagues etc.
They need to take the time and see what's outside ...who competition is!!!There is alot of talent at MPI, unfortnately they don't know how to use them.
It's not about what grade you're in.... it's about how you play the game :-)!!

it was sad to see MPI lose to IOLANI after MPI had a 18 point lead in the 3rd quarter. all i gotta say is both the girls AND boys teams for MPI need to make some major changes!!!

I don't agree with HS coaches having to watch outside leagues. There have been many good coaches who do not follow the outside park leagues.
And seriously, how many schools actually heavily recruit for girls basketball? Getting 1 or 2 girls in over 2-3 years is not heavily recruiting.
It's called gender equity so when they get boys in for basketball, the girls program gets their few little tokens so the Title IX card isn't played.
On a side note, having an 18 point lead in a girls game is like having a 30 point lead in a boys game.
How do you lose an 18 point lead in the middle of the 3rd quarter in a girls game?
That just blows my mind.

I watch some of them at Kalakaua's practices. Two things appear to stand out.
First, leadership. No set spiritual or vocal leader. Either Yamachika needs to step up or Babbit and/or Kiki need to jump up!
Second, and this is huge! No buy in from all the players and this may be an after effect from parents. All coaches agree that the buy in is the most important in any team play. It doesn't matter if the coach is good or bad (well, maybe not REAL bad) but the coach needs to be able to make quick decisions without being hamstrung. Substitute this player for that one...wait...his dad is a friend/client/strong supporter of the booster club! Or even using the "squeaky wheel" concept. All this trash needs to go!
If the coach is not seasoned but has full confidence from his staff and parents as well as the players, he/she would be more available to suggestions knowing the "bulls eye" is not on his/her back! Being comfortable and confident allows for better reasoning and decision making and these will definitely impact game decisions!
Just my opinion from a former coach with no idea!

There seems to be some hidden bias in some of these posts.
The games I've watched MPI this past season looked okay to me, I mean, they didn't seem out-coached and their players put out consistent effort. I think they were exposed in the full court game but dominated the half court set.
Against teams that put full court pressure on them the entire game, they didn't handle it well on a consistent basis. Their guard pay was good at times but too inconsistent considering their strength down low. Their "bigs" didn't run the court well but there aren't many in this state that do. There was only one "big" girls player I saw do that this year and she was from Maui and she's playing Big 10 basketball next year.
"Talent" takes a secondary place at the table to "system" in high school basketball. It's nice to have both. How many teams have we seen over the years that have won by playing together in a system, playing for each other, instead of displaying their individual talents?

I haven't had the opportunity to see Mid-Pac play last season. I have heard from parents as well as other coaches but "db's" points are consistent with talent-rich programs that struggle. I hope to see a player grab the team and become the floor leader.

great points db i think thats were alot if not all the problems at mpi happaened last season, rich in talent poor in team chemistry. iolani didnt have the talent pool that mpi had but beat mpi last year. the coaches have worked with the current team, some 3 years in a row going back to middle school, maybe they can have a team with better chemistry. good luck owls
