Since most of us have deep perspectives of Teams and Coaches. My Question is where, if having the opportunity to coach would most of you rather coach at?

Would it be an ILH Powerhouse School such as:

    Punahou
    Iolani
    Kamehameha

Or would it be the traditional OIA Schools such as:

    Kalaheo
    Moanalua
    Kahuku
    Mililani
    Radford
    Campbell

Or would it be a small School like:

    Hanalani
    Word of Life
    Kalani
    AOP
    St. Joseph

I'm just curious to see what everyone would pick and why. As for me I would probably choose one of the not so highly touted Schools. Only because I like to be the underdog and having under privelaged Kids succeed in life. Teaching someone the basics and watching them grow makes me happy. But don't get me wrong if Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha ever called me to take the job hell yeah I would go in a heartbeat. Like I said thats if they call me. But that will never happen because I can't read really well and I have a hearing problem. LOL

Monkeybizness -- Good question. The easy answer would be to say Iolani, Punahou or Kamehameha -- the haves in money, facility and support -- versus the small schools -- the have nots with often tight finances, average facilities and up-and-down support. But the intense pressure to win at the top ILH schools and even in the OIA places a heavy burden on the coaches and if they don't win, they usually last a short period of time. Mark "Doc" Mugiishi was sensational at Iolani with eight state titles in 20 seasons. But if you look at Punahou and Kamehameha, they've had several coaching changes over the years. It's tough coaching at those top schools with the high level of media attention and the pressure to win. Coaching at a smaller school that has solid financial support and good facilities, plus good fan support -- somewhere like Hawaii Baptist on Oahu or Hawaii Prep on the Big Island, could be excellent places to coach. Both have good ADs (Deren Oshiro at HBA and Stephen Perry at HPA) and a good coach could build a successful program there and stay for a long run. I still admire the terrific job the late Pete Smith did at Kalaheo. But when schools have proven coaches who can be successful, players will want to come. My choice if I ever wanted to coach high school -- Hawaii Baptist. Just look what they're done with their volleyball programs.

I'd personally like to one day return to my alma mater (Aiea High School) and coach there. I also have the pipe dream of trying to increase basketball fusion on the west side of the island. However, a resume, experience, a name and monetary support is needed for such ambition. I'm just slightly under 0/4 on that. ;)

Working my way from the ground up, I emailed a bunch of ILH schools and an O.I.A. school (short version). I just happened to end up at that O.I.A. school with a guy named Chico, another named Walt and one more named Kavin. I do my best to fulfill my tasks and remain in a sponge-like mindset the rest of the time; trying to soak up every drop of knowledge that comes my way.
