Kanisha Bello of Waiakea High School has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Hawai'i Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

The award recognizes athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character. Bello is now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Girls Basketball Player of the Year award.

The 5-foot-7 senior wing led the Warriors to a 13-11 record this past season and a second-place finish in the Big Island Interscholastic Federation Division I, averaging 14.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.7 steals per game. A two-time first-team all-league selection, Bello was a 2008-09 McDonald's All-American Game selection committee nominee.

Bello has maintained a 3.45 GPA in the classroom. Bello has volunteered at a local food drive, as a youth basketball coach for local elementary school children and in the psychology department at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo.

Bello has signed a National Letter of Intent to play basketball on scholarship at the University of Idaho this fall.

as you can tell this is another one of waiakea's stanout scholar athletes. this is something that kona lacks. this is very impressive. high gpa, community service, interning at the college. this is what i see.

i have been following the big island/kona posts over the past 2 weeks. i have to say that kona isnt happening. where are the stories about academic achievements about the kona girls? all i see is they win games. who cares. lets see some humanitarian stuff. lets see some academic stuff. lets see some community stuff. yah u win a few measley games. i talk to my friends at uh and kona is the laughing stock of the big island. all the peeps at uh that are in the higher program and from teh big island are either from kam or waiakea. i havent met anyone from kona in the business programs. so win ur titles and let the others make their mark in life. howz dat sucka?

Good post HHF- But kanisha would of done the same no matter what school she attended even at konawaena if i may say, It's all attributed to her parents and last but not least herself.

That is possible, but it that was true, why aren't more konawaena kids being recognized for academic accomplishments?

Well one kid from Konawaena Middle School won the spelling bee the other day. That is great, one kid out of thousands. I hope Konawaena doesn't ruin him.
