OIA and ILH: Official Start Dates

2007-08 Hawaii State Basketball TournamentThe official start dates have been set for the 2007-08 Hawaii High School Basketball season and to alleviate some of the scheduling concerns with the newly added girls teams, the ILH will have a little jumpstart on the rest of the state.

    2007-08 Start Dates:

  • ILH Boys & Girls: All Levels - October 29th
  • OIA Girls: JV/Varsity - November 5th
  • OIA Boys: JV/Varsity - November 12th
    2008 Hawaii Basketball State Tournament:

  • Girls: February 12th - 15th
  • Boys: February 20th - 23rd

It’ll be interesting to see how the OIA coaches feel about their competitors in the ILH receiving an extra couple of weeks of prep time (one week for girls)… It’ll also be interesting to see how the ILH teams deal with the added two week overlap with football. For schools like St. Louis, Punahou and Iolani, their basketball teams could be without key players (and a head coach in the case of St. Louis) for up to 5 weeks if their football teams are able to advance to the State Tournament Finals.

I can’t wait for basketball season!!! I wonder if the OIA will cry “foul” about the ILH receiving an extra two weeks of practice prior to the start of the OIA season. I know I would be a little perturbed to say the least.

Anyone care to start doling out a preseason TOP 10…these things are great for debates. As soon as I figure one out I will sure to post it.

Preseason Top 10 and All-Star Selections are coming… just didn’t want to put them out too early. Still a month and a half away (but coming fast).

Plus now, there’s boys AND GIRLS to do.

I’m sure there’ll be a few coaches who are less than happy about it. It seems as though the OIA is always on the defensive when it comes to the ILH…

But when you think about it, even with the extra two weeks, the OIA schools will still probably get more gym time than ILH schools like Punahou, Iolani and Kamehameha who each have 10 teams sharing gyms - 12 for Punahou. The OIA, at most, has 4 teams per school because they don’t field Division II or Intermediate teams.

I received my ILH basketball season schedule today. I was hoping to see some varsity games scheduled at the Neal Blaisdell Center, but looks like they will be hosted at each schools respective site.

Would have been nice for the ILH to go back to the days when regular season games were held at NBC arena.

It seems most of the talk here has been on ILH players and teams. Who are the OIA teams that will be tough next year. One would have to guess that Kaimuki and Kalaheo will be in the mix again and I heard Mililani looked really solid in the summer. Of course, you can’t look past Moanalua with Stevie Austin back.

Howzit OIA fan…I don’t think its about no respect. Anyone is welcome here to come and talk about whatever they want regarding Hawaii Basketball. It’s just that the last few posts just so happen to be about ILH basketball.

Personally, I’m an ILH guy but I cannot begin to tell you how stoked I was to see Kaimuki win the title last year. Coach Kelly Grant is a close personal friend of mine and I have a lot of respect for what he’s doing there at Kaimuki.

Feel free to talk about OIA basketball anytime…and I can almost guarantee some good feedback.

Trying to be objective here, but it really doesn’t seem like the OIA will have much this year.

Unlike last year’s Kaimuki team, there’s no team in the OIA this year that has the same mixture of skill (3 core returnees) and experience (Kaimuki made it to the finals in 2006). Moanalua is probably the closest with the return of Stevie Austin, but I don’t think its the same.

Kalaheo should also be in the mix… they always are somehow.

Anyone know if there’s any good teams in the OIA West?

I’ve heard that Mililani brings back quite a bit of players from last season’s undefeated team until they ran into Kaimuki in what I believe was the quarterfinals.

A few coaches around the leagues tell me that they looked pretty impressive during the summer.

I think what Mililani lacks, in all due respects to their West counterparts, is the lack of playing tough opponents on a consistent level, unlike the East. Hiram Akina is doing a great job at that school. If I had to choose (not rank) the top 5 OIA schools right now it would probably look something like this:

    Kalaheo
    Mililani
    Moanalua
    Kaimuki
    Kailua
again, in no particular order and just off the top of my head without looking at last year’s rosters.

Hawaii Hoops…since the season is coming up soon, how soon are you coming out with your preseason top 10 as well as a new Top Hawaii Players both Boys and Girls?

Sorry for rushing you…but I got basketball jones!!!!

    Thanks!!!

Probably not what you want to hear islandstyl, but the lists will hopefully be ready in about a month… maybe a couple weeks before the ILH starts practice.

There’s just a lot of research to be done with the boys and girls seasons coming and since we don’t use a collection of votes to determine the Top 10, we want to be sure we go through the proper steps to figure out what everyone has and accurately assess how good we think they’ll be. In the end, everything we post will still be up for discussion, but at least we can say we made a good attempt.

    Mahalo for reading.

    My take on the OIA…
Kalaheo is good, but not great, Lishman is a 1st team all-state candidate but they lost all of their size and if Lishman is not hitting, then they become average.

Mililani has more talent than any other team. Great size and very athletic. Add Akinas’ son son to the mix and you get a very good team. But can they ever beat a team from the east in the play-off?

Moanalua not only has Austin back, they have Kure and Hua as well. Both starters on last’s year’s team. They also have the 6-6 kid back that did’nt play at states last year.

Kaimauki lost two teriffic players and replace them with one. The young Sophmore is a beast, but the guard play is suspect.

Campbell and Radford always are is the running and Kahuku’s young team is a year older and will be better.

    Here’s my prediction
    East
    1. Moanalua
    2. Kalaheo
    3. Kahuku
    4. Kaimuki
    5. Kailua
    6. Castle
    7. Roosevelt

    West
    1. Mililani
    2. Campbell
    3. Kapolei
    4. Waianae
    5. Pearl City
    6. Radford
    7. Leilehua

    State qualifiers after OIA play-offs
    1. Mililani
    2. Moanalua
    3. Kalaheo
    4. Kahuku
    5. Campbell

    ILH
    1. St. Louis
    2. Punahou
    3. Kamehameha
    4. Iolani
    5. Mid Pac
    6. Maryknoll
    7. Damien

    State qualifiers after ILH play-offs

    1. St. Louis
    2. Punahou
    3. Mid Pac

Wow…has Kapolei improved that much? I haven’t seen them during the summer but I believed they struggled last year. Do they return a lot? I know Kapolei has some great looking athletes on their football team…

They were at Kalaheo this summer and plyaed really well at times. Completly different look from last season. But we’ll see when the season rolls around.

Interesting ILH prediction with MidPac finishing 5th in the regular season and winning the 3rd plane tourney. Actually, it kinda reflects my feelings that MidPac will play the role of spoiler this year but I don’t think they have quite enough to finish 3rd at the end of the year.

MidPac has three very solid players but their bench and lack of size is their achilles.

I am not quite sure yet how I would rank the order of finish in the ILH but I do feel that Punahou and St. Louis are the top 2 as of now. Steinhoff’s recovery will obviously play a major role in Punahou’s season.
